Unemployment is the biggest concern among Somaliland Youth

Somaliland: ''The biggest concern among Somaliland community is lack of employment opportunities that is rampant and wide spread in all provinces of the country. It is a well-known fact that the youth play a lion’s share when it comes to the socioeconomic development of the nation''

The future of the students

As for Somaliland, the exact number of unemployed people is not known for reasons pertaining to lack of resources and statistics are not available revealing the high unemployment rate in the country. More and more young students are enrolling into local universities in the hope of pursuing tertiary education to broaden the chances of landing highly paid jobs but all that efforts end up in vain. Every year, hundreds of new students graduate from local universities with high expectations that they will be part of the vehicle of pushing their country in the right direction.

Once you come out to main congregations places be it tea shops, snack bars you are about to set an eye many people who are idles. Many young people depart the country on daily day basis seeking better opportunities in the west. Reports show that many perish on their way without reaching their final destinations. Those are the ones who are fleeing their homeland and risking their life to reach the shores of faraway places. Recently, there was a wind of change in the political landscape where a party that was driven change assumed the leadership of the country. It was predicted that this will open doors to all Somaliland community at home and abroad.

The main opposition political party campaigned under the banner of eradicating corruption and providing better employment opportunities for all walks of life. In the last presidential elections contested the former president Dahir Rayale Kahin who was the flag bearer of UDUB political party was overwhelmingly defeated in a large margin by his main rival Mr. Ahmed Mohamed Mohamud Siilaanyo who was the flag bearer of Kulmiye party which was campaigning for change. Finally, the hearts and minds of Somaliland community were gained by Kulmiye party and won the race.

Celebrations reached a fever pitch in all regions of the country after the outcome was announced by Somaliland National Electoral Commission. Having the hopes been dashed by the former administration, they kept hopeful that the newly elected president who is a veteran politician will achieve peace and prosperity
From day one, President siilaanyo in his inaugural address at the presidential palace outlines and unveiled the policy of the new administration which assumed the responsibility of running the country. He assured that he is about to establish a small government but promised firmly that he will do everything in his power to make a zero tolerance policy towards eradicating corruptions at all levels and there will be an equal opportunity for all people.

First, the president lived up to his promises by forming a small government that will function effectively and efficiently. There is one school of thought claiming that the president awarded to key ministerial portfolios to his next a kin.

Corruption and unemployment are still rampant and wide spread at all levels of governmental institutions. One great leap that Siilaanyo’s administration achieved is providing intermediate schools free of fees which received a joyous welcome from all walks of life but the cost of living is too high and prices of commodities are skyrocketing. We know Somaliland is a young nation struggling to get an international recognition from the world for the past 20 years with challenges facing the nation be it civil wars, inflation sanction of the import of livestock and sometimes claiming that the livestock are infected with disease known as the Rift valley. Somaliland achieved miracles with very little help and resources from overseas. Previous administrations sent the world many wake up calls but fell on deaf ears. One day action will speak louder than words.

When you see what Somaliland achieved with short period of time, there is a long way to go with patience and diplomacy behind the curtains. Somaliland lives in peace with its neighbors and built strong bilateral ties with them. The first the open its diplomatic office in the Capital of Hargeisa is Ethiopia. Fighting against sea piracy and terrorism which pose a constant threat to the world and cooperating security matters with regional and other countries is a priority for this administration.
