Saudi signs South Korean nuclear co-op deal. By Michael Palmer

A bilateral agreement between South Korea and Saudi Arabia has been signed for cooperation on the development of nuclear energy. The Saudi Arabian government has said it is attempting to diversify its energy mix in an effort to meet continually rising power demand, and the agreement outlines cooperation in research and development, training, safety and waste management.

A statement released by King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy also said that the cooperation would extend to the construction of nuclear power plants and research reactors. Saudi Arabia also has nuclear cooperation deals with France and Argentina, and despite huge oil reserves, is struggling to keep up with rising demand for energy.

The Kingdom has recently announced investment in renewable projects, and will continue to develop a nuclear programme with outside help. Earlier this year, it was revealed the country planned to have a series of 16 nuclear reactors online by 2030.
