Ethiopia Denies Knowledge of Ali Khalif Galaydh

- Ethiopia has denied allegations of providing politician Ali Khalif Galayd with any security escort to the Taleeh meeting. The denial was made by the Ethiopian ambassador in Somaliland Brigadier General Beraha Tesfaye during an interview with The Horn at the Ethiopian embassy in Hargeisa.

Amb. Tesfaye categorically denied the presence of Ethiopian security forces operating in Somaliland thus the impossibility of his country’s security forces providing any security escort to the Taleeh meeting bound politician from Ethiopia

“we do not know anything about the so called politician and his whereabouts or security is not an Ethiopian concern” said Amb Tesfaye.

Mr. Galaydh a former prime minister in the TFG government is currently chairing the Taleeh meeting convened by his Dulbahante clansmen to show support for Somaliland.

On the issue of imposing taxes on Ethiopian bound goods on transit from Berbera, Amb Tesfaye said that the move if not revised will have a negative impact on the economy of the country. “If these transit goods taxation is not reversed Ethiopian businesses might be forced to return to the port of Djibouti’ cautioned Amb. Tesfaye

The Ethiopian diplomat also revealed that he has written to the ministry of finance on the taxation issue but he is yet to receive any reply. Asked to comment on rumors that his country has abandoned it’s mediation efforts between Somaliland and Putland, the ambassador said that his country’s position was only that of facilitator

“The mediation depends on the willingness of both Somaliland and Puntland administrations, Ethiopia does not have any agenda of forcing or imposing peace on this two neighbours, if they are willing to meet we are ready to facilitate”

Questioned on his view on the reappointment of Ali Hor Hor as Berbera port boss, and if he thinks Hor Hor will ease the prevailing obstacles on transit goods traffic Amb. Tesfaye said “First of all, there is no close relation we have with whoever is in charge of Berbera port.

We don’t care whether Ali or Omar comes. What we need is implementing earlier agreements both countries reached regarding transit goods.”
