Somalia's new leader inaugurated in Mogadishu

''The third pillar of our policy is the unity of the country. We will continue the peace talks with Somaliland initiated by my predecessor and we will work to make unity a reality for Somalia," President Mohamoud said during a speech at the handover ceremony.

- Somalia's new president is formally inaugurated on Sunday in a ceremony in the capital Mogadishu attended by regional and international leaders. The ceremony was attended by regional and international leaders including the Prime Minister of Ethiopia Hailemariam Desalegn, President Ismail Omar Ghelle of Djibouti and top delegations from Uganda, Kenya, Arab League and the African Union and the United Nations.

Speaking after the formal handing over, Somalia's new president Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud said improving security and rebuilding the country's economy will be among his top priority. He said his government will work to make talks with the breakaway republic of Somaliland one of his new administration's priorities.

"The third pillar of our policy is the unity of the country. We will continue the peace talks with Somaliland initiated by my predecessor and we will work to make unity a reality for Somalia," President Mohamoud said during a speech at the handover ceremony.

The new Somali president was voted overwhelmingly by the country's legislature on Sept. 10, defeating outgoing president Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed. Former president Ahmed called on his supporters to back the new Somali leader, saying he was fully satisfied with the results of the election and that he will work with new Somali leadership.

President Ismail Omar Ghelle of Djibouti whose country has sent peacekeepers to Somalia said that his government will extend the new president of Somalia all the support he needs in bettering the war-ravaged Horn of Africa nation.

The new Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn, congratulated the Somali president on his victory and pledged the support of his government to Somalia. As he took over the presidency from his processor, Somalia's new president faces the daunting task of fixing a country ravaged by two decades of civil war, a devastating famine and a recurrent drought
