My Visionary Plan: Ethio-Somaliland treaty - Port for water

Image

- The people of Somaliland and Ethiopia have relationship that pre-dates more than 300 years and on top of that Somaliland is predominantly backed by the Isaaq clan, which have Ethiopian mother ancestry.

Ethiopia is landlocked but God blessed her with lakes and rivers unlike any other in Africa. Somaliland has no flowing rivers but plenty of ports. I am an Isaaq born and bred in Ethiopia. I have been to Somaliland once and Somalia remains alien to me and will probably be for the rest of my life.

I want the people of Somaliland and Ethiopia to work together and tackle problems together.

Search for oil expands in Somaliland

DNO, who also runs the Tawke oilfiled in Kurdistan, above, plans to begin exploration of its block in Somaliland next year. Ben Lando / Metrography / Corbis

- Somaliland hopes that exploration by international oil companies will unearth reserves similar to those in nearby Yemen, and is in talks to increase the number of companies taking on acreage in the quasi-autonomous region.

The region, which considers itself independent from Somalia but is not recognised by the international community, last week signed its second deal with an established international player - Norway's DNO International, a company that merged with the UAE's RAK Petroleum.

DNO's move was preceded by Genel Energy, which signed a production-sharing agreement for two blocks in Somaliland last August. Both companies are already producing oil in the Kurdish region of Iraq, another autonomous region.

Somaliland: The Safe Haven Next Door- By Ahmed M. Mahamoud '' Sillanyo''

''Somaliland was once part of chaotic Somalia. Today it's a thriving oasis of peace''. H.E. President Ahmed M. Sillanyo

The Horn of Africa has endured decades of violent repression, civil war, terrorism, and piracy. But after a period of neglect, the international community has taken preliminary steps to restore political stability in the region.

This new approach is evident in Somalia, where a new government, with support from the United States and others, is making a concerted effort to move forward. There are signs of progress. Expatriate technocrats are returning to help rebuild. Piracy off the coast of Somalia has diminished, with attacks falling from 239 in 2010 to 46 in 2012. The British Embassy recently reopened its long-shuttered doors. Yet the country's stability remains fragile, as witnessed just days ago when al-Shabab terrorists bombed Mogadishu's judicial complex, taking the lives of 29 innocent people and injuring more than 40 others.

Embassy Row: Shadow democracy in Africa (Somaliland).

(The Washington Times)- A small but stable democracy lies in the shadow of Somalia in the volatile and terrorist-infested Horn of Africa. It formed a government based on the U.S. Constitution. It feeds more than 3.5 million residents and exports 4 million head of livestock a year to its biggest customer, Saudi Arabia. It holds elections, and defeated incumbents peaceably transfer power to the opposition.

Yet for all its pretense to nationhood, Somaliland remains unrecognized diplomatically by all of the 193 countries of the United Nations. It is a stepchild of Somalia, which spent the past 22 years in anarchy, war and famine, while Somaliland quietly built a functioning democracy.

Is Turkey a loner on the thorny path to peace?

- The second Istanbul Conference on Mediation was held again in Istanbul under the auspices of Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu after a year of conflicts ranging across the world from Syria to Mali, from the Philippines to Sudan and Iraq.

The conference aims to promote mediation in global conflict resolution approaches and provide a platform to bring together representatives engaged in mediation and peacemaking, such as policy makers, academics and NGOs, among others.

Somaliland May Soon Become a Recognized Country

Introduction

- The Republic of Somaliland re-declared its independence on May 18th, 1991, therefore removing itself from Somalia proper. I say re-declared its independence because on June 26th, 1960 it initially gained independence from Great Britain and then voluntarily joined into a union with Somalia Italiana(Italian Somaliland) on July 1st, 1960, to create the Somali Republic.

Since re-declaring its independence, Somaliland has been able to govern itself peacefully as a functioning country with an independent judiciary, free press, distinctive currency (Somaliland shilling), and other attributes of national governance. Since 1991, Somaliland has had four presidents with the latter two being elected in open elections that was deemed free and fair by international observers. I had the pleasure of observing their 2010 Presidential election.

Why Ethiopia and Somaliland are natural partners

- The current Ethiopian leadership specially under Meles has wasted a lot of time and resources on useless missions such as restoring Mogadishu. They say: You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink. This is certainly true when it comes to Somalia. Ethiopia can tell Somalia and its leaders to restore peace and seal the common border but it is up to only Somalis in Somalia to take that initiative.

Time and time again for the last 22, they have been baby sat, their diapers removed, thrown out, recycled and tried with all different sizes but no they are still crying for foreign assistance.

- DNO International, the Norwegian company merged with the UAE's RAK Petroleum, struck an oil exploration deal in Somaliland, its second foray into an autonomous region.

The company plans to begin exploration at the SL18 onshore block next year.

Wind Brings Light to Somaliland

- A wind turbine, situated some 20 kilometres outside of Somaliland’s capital Hargeisa, has become a significant totem of the country’s changing energy landscape. The breakaway semi-autonomous region that was once part of Somalia has struggled to develop its economy despite dilapidated energy infrastructure that makes it almost impossible for businesses to function.

But later this year, Somaliland’s first Electricity Energy Act will be launched. It will be the country’s first legal and regulatory framework aimed at managing energy production and distribution, with a focus on piloting alternative energy solutions, including wind farms in four major cities.

This year´s Global Campaign for education calls for «Trained Teachers for All». There are about 61 million children without access to primary education alone. To reach these children, there is an estimated need of 1,7 million more teachers.

Photo: NRC/Christian Jepsen The campaign aims at upholding every child’s right to quality education by focusing on the enormous needs there are for teachers around the world, and on how to tackle these. Not only is there a numeric shortage, but many children that do have access to schools don’t have access to learning because of the low quality of teachers. This overall situation has created a teacher gap that hinders the achievement of Education for All goals.

Genel Energy eyes transformational changes in Kurdistan

- Finally, there is Somaliland, which John Hurst, the company’s head of exploration, believes is Genel’s most exciting asset. It owns 40,000 square kilometres prospective for oil and is targeting a resource of 1bn barrels unrisked from licences SL-10B and SL-13.

“We believe Somaliland is in the same Cretaceous rift as Yemen, which has around seven billion barrels recoverable [reserves],” said Metherell. “There are oil shows all across the acreage and the potential for some very, very material finds;

President Silanyo: A Great Negotiator And A Great Orator

- To some, like me, president Silanyo has a near-omnipotent power at the negotiating tables, carrying with him an indubitable moral authority and gentle but firm sense of fairness. Whenever he is in meetings, he will first listen to other people in the meetings unless he is disclosing and informing the participants about new information that the participants are unaware of. He does not interrupt others when they are talking, and never would anyone detect that he is controlling the discussion but, in fact, he is. Silanyo would simply listen.

Somaliland 'won't attend' London Somali conference

- President Ahmed Mohamed Mohamoud Siilaanyo of the Republic of Somaliland says he will not attend a conference on Somalia scheduled to take place in London, according to reports from Hargeisa, the capital of Somaliland.

The conference which aims to bring together all the disparate Somali players and factions will take place on May 7. Reports indicate the president expressed his disinterest in the London talks when he recently visited the city to meet members of the Somaliland diaspora.

Somaliland: Global Youth Service Day: A Call for Action!

- “Today we have the largest generation of young people the world has ever known. They are demanding their rights and a greater voice in economic and political life. We need to pull the Unites Nations (UN) system together like never before to support a new social contract of job- rich economic growth. Let us start with young people” A Quote by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon!

Commencing at my student years, days are different like human beings. Life is said to be the best teacher and every day is a lesson in the class room of life. My father told me that there are lots of dimensional elements of living which are confronted you in the ultimate journey which we call life. Sometimes you think that you have a miserable future and lose your hope, your living conditions passing on messages to you on what kind of person you should be and how you should behave in your society.

They have consistently put an effort into establishing stability and promoting development in the region,” Silanyo said during an exclusive interview with Today's Zaman in Ankara on Sunday.

Somaliland’s Case is Historically, Politically, and legally Justifiable

1. Abstract

- On May 18 1991, the ex-British Somaliland Clan Representatives and Somali National Movement (SNM) leadership had collectively and enthusiastically proclaimed that Somaliland British protectorate restored its independence and political sovereignty. This dissolution of 1960 merger was nonviolent, accurate, applicable and timely. Therefore, this paper is very much arguing that Somaliland‟s case of rejection and withdrawal from the abortive and unrepresentative merger is historically, politically and legally justifiable. It also argues that the driving forces behind this decision included the need to achieve justice, equality, democracy, as well as, the creation of credible freedom for Somaliland citizens and durable peace in the Horn of Africa.

Top Scandals Djibouti Investigates the Abdourahman Boreh Affair

Djibouti, Djibouti -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/11/2013 -- Earlier this month, the Republic of Djibouti filed a civil lawsuit in the Commercial Court in London, England, against the prominent Djiboutian businessman Abdourahman Boreh.

Boreh served as Chairman of the Djibouti Port and Free Zone Authority (DPFZA) between 2003 and 2008. It is alleged that during this time, Mr. Boreh abused his position of public authority for the benefit of his own private companies and his own personal gain. The Republic of Djibouti has launched this lawsuit in a bid to recover tens of millions of dollars in losses which it believes were sustained as a direct result of Mr. Boreh’s actions.

(Scandel): Somalia acknowledges rape by soldiers

''The most prominent rape case was one in which an alleged victim accused government soldiers but was herself put on trial''. Agencies

- After months of denial, Somalia's government has for the first time acknowledged that its security forces were involved in rape cases that drew an international outcry by human rights groups.

Army commanders often denied accusations that soldiers were involved in a spate of rapes, attributing the crimes to al-Shabab fighters who allegedly wore army uniforms to smear the reputation of the military.

Somaliland: Could This Be another Sterile London Conference on Somalia?

- Speaking after President Silanyo & William Hague meeting, the Foreign Secretary said: “I am delighted to see President Silanyo in London for the Conference on Somalia. Somaliland has valuable lessons to share from its own experience of building stability and democracy. I welcome President Silanyo’s participation at the Conference and am grateful for Somaliland’s continued co-operation in the fight against piracy and terrorism.”

That was in February 22, 2012 and indeed, President Silanyo attended that conference and shared Somaliland’s own valuable lessons from its own experience of building stability and democracy. Now few weeks before another London conference on Somalia, Somalilanders are raising the following questions:

Did We Get the Muslim Brotherhood Wrong? Nope. But it's time to revise our assessments.

''The Brotherhood's commitment to democratic procedures never really translated into a commitment to democratic or liberal norms, however..''. Foreign Policy

- The deterioration of Egyptian politics has spurred an intense, often vitriolic polarization between Islamists and their rivals that has increasingly spilled over into analytical disputes. Some principled liberals who once supported the Muslim Brotherhood against the Mubarak regime's repression have recanted. Longtime critics of the Islamists view themselves as vindicated and demand that Americans, including me, apologize for getting the Brotherhood wrong. As one prominent Egyptian blogger recently put it, "are you ready to apologize for at least 5 years of promoting the MB as fluffy Democrats to everyone? ARE YOU?"

‘In Archer’s Footsteps: Birding in the Republic of Somaliland‘

- On a packed but enjoyable day, which included the African Bird Club’s AGM, six guest speakers talked on a range of subjects that encompassed topics from travelling to largely unvisited parts of Africa, an update on the status of the Liben Lark, a report from Libya on the isolated race of Lesser Crested Tern, an insight into work being done to recreate the lost avifuana of the Mascarenes, and a genetic study that promises to overturn the current phylogeny of Africa’s White-eyes (Zosteropidae).

In his talk ‘In Archer’s Footsteps: Birding in the Republic of SomalilandNigel Redman, publisher and tour leader with Birdquest, described the birds and landscapes of one of the least known regions in Africa, Somaliland, which is bordered – in the south and west – by Ethiopia. Nigel begins our discussion with an overview of a location that even the most intrepid birders may not have considered visiting, and ends with news of an interesting cisticola…

Somaliland: On the Restoration of Its Sovereignty and Independence

SNM Executive Committee Memorandum

 INTRODUCTION

- In the checkered history of the old Somali Republic (July 1960-June 1991), two facts need not be forgotten: Somaliland created that Republic and Somaliland brought it to an end. The former occasion was indeed euphoric, the latter remains written in indelible blood. On both occasions, Somaliland was well within its rights. Somaliland's ill-started dream of a greater Somalia dates back to the close of the Second World War. As that famous and fateful wind of change began to sweep across Africa, the people of Somaliland found themselves consumed by a vision of a Greater Somalia, i.e. the unity of the five Somali's comprising the British protectorate of Somaliland, ex-Italian trusteeship territory of Somalia, Eastern Ethiopia, Djibouti and North-East Kenya.

Turkey to host three-way talks with presidents of Somaliland, Somalia

- Turkey will hold a meeting with leaders of Somaliland and Somalia in İstanbul on April 13, according to Turkish diplomatic sources.

A senior Turkish diplomat who spoke to Today's Zaman on the condition of anonymity stated that after the tripartite meeting, which will also be attended by Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Somaliland President Ahmed Mahamoud Silanyo may also come together in a tête-à-tête meeting, adding that the two leaders may also hold talks with Turkish officials in Ankara after their meeting in İstanbul.

The Legal and Moral Direction for Talks with Somalia in Turkey.

''Turkey must give the green light to the Muslim countries to recognize Somaliland sovereignty and I am sure other Muslim countries will not only follow suit but will have the courage to stand up for justice''. Yusuf Dirir Ali

- Turkey is the only country on earth that recognizes the Turkish Cypriot Republic. I personally support Turkish stand on Cyprus for a single reason, because I firmly believe in self determination for all nations and I deem all the Peoples to have the right to be treated justly and fairly. I am not trying to be politically correct here and believe me, I am not a 60s hippie, who is idealistically listening to Bob Marley songs in a beach somewhere in the Caribbean Islands and smoking a joint. Far from that I am a Muslim, who prays five times a day and believes in all heavenly religious teachings of justice and peace.

A Message Of Appreciation from Edna Concerning Ayaan

''Neither Ayaan, nor myself, have any intention to remain in Australia longer than it will take Ayaan to have the operations that she needs''. Edna Adan Ismail

- I have been in communications for over a year with the Australian team. The list is long and each of them had a role to play in Ayaan’s case. I appreciate everything that the doctors, the members of the Brisbane Rotary Club, and the Immigration experts have done to secure the visa for Ayaan and for myself to accompany and support her during the many reconstructive operations her condition required. I very much appreciated the offer of Dr. John Arvier, an expert in facial reconstruction, to perform the operations that Ayaan needed for free.
