Abaarso Tech is pleased to announce that one of its top students, Mubarack Mohamed Mohamoud Daahir, will spend the entire 2011-2012 school year studying at AT’s sister school, Worcester Academy.
An American boarding school founded in 1834, Worcester Academy targets a global education for its students, and as such, is paying the entire $60,000 cost of Mubarack’s year of education. Altogether, this scholarship includes visa fees, airfare, full tuition, food, housing, and even spending money to allow him to properly fit in with his surroundings.
Abaarso Tech students applying for this scholarship underwent an intense selection process including a written application and an interview. Student disciplinary records, academic performance, and community involvement were also considered. The application process ended with an anonymous vote of AT’s staff.
“Despite many great candidates, it is hard to think of anyone more deserving than Mubarack,” said Jonathan Starr, Managing Director of Abaarso Tech. “The first time I met Mubarack he had been accepted to our school but told me that since he couldn’t afford the fees he was hoping his friend could go in his place. He didn’t attempt to negotiate, he simply accepted his fate and wanted a friend to benefit where he could not.
We later came to learn that Mubarack came from the humblest of backgrounds, had grown up in a refugee camp, and had lived transient for much of his life. When he arrived at AT he could barely understand or speak a word of English. Nonetheless, it was only weeks into his first year when teachers noticed Mubarack’s rare combination of maturity, raw intelligence, work ethic, and morality. We have little doubt that Mubarack will give Worcester Academy everything they were hoping for in an international student.”
In the future both schools hope to expand this scholarship to include both boys and girls. However, even in this pilot year, Abaarso Tech will send two female students to America for one month. While there, the AT students will have an opportunity to spend time visiting Worcester Academy and helping the school identify what is needed for AT girls to live and excel there in the future. After careful consideration and a thorough process,
Deka Abdirahman Adam and Fadumo Yusuf Abdilaahi were selected. Deka and Fadumo have placed among AT’s top 5 students from the moment they set foot on campus.
Abaarso Tech is extremely grateful to Worcester Academy for providing this wonderful educational opportunity to its students and looks forward to Worcester Academy students visiting Abaarso Tech in the future.
