IOM- 103 internally displaced persons (IDP) families in one of Hargeisa’s largest IDP settlements received critically needed emergency assistance from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) on 19th March 2013.
A wild fire that engulfed the State House IDP settlement at the beginning of March left families homeless and in desperate need of basic humanitarian support. Each household received a set of non-food items that included towels, dresses, t-shirts, slippers, cups and washing basins.
Mr Dayib Askar, IOM’s Mixed Migration Project Assistant in Hargeisa, said: “IOM provided this support because we are concerned about the welfare of migrants, mobile populations, and their host communities.”
Mr Ali Mohamed Abdalla, the Director General of Somaliland’s Ministry of Resettlement, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction, who participated in the distribution of items, added: “These people lost everything they had; we thank IOM for always responding swiftly whenever we request for assistance.”
Other humanitarian agencies that participated in the distribution were the Norwegian Refugee Council, Red Crescent and Islamic Relief.
