In a macabre twist on Noah’s ark, a crane in the Somaliland port of Berbera is hoisting camels two by two on to a ship taking them to their death across the Gulf of Aden. Just like the awkwardly suspended cargo, Somaliland itself has been left dangling for 20 years. In 1991 the former British protectorate declared independence from anarchic Somalia, but no country has recognised it, as it is considered part of Somalia. Yet Somaliland, which marks its 20th anniversary on Wednesday, is largely peaceful and has built itself up from ruin with very little outside donor help

A breakaway, semi-desert territory on the coast of the Gulf of Aden, Somaliland declared independence after the overthrow of Somali military dictator Siad Barre in 1991. The move followed a secessionist struggle during which Siad Barre's forces pursued rebel guerrillas in the territory. Tens of thousands of people were killed and towns were flattened.

Two things made me really happy a few weeks ago. The independence of Somaliland is not in jeopardy nor has it ever been in danger of external influences. The creation of falls narrative to justify the campaign against the inevitable (the recognition of Somaliland) is nothing new to its people and leadership. The illegality of Somaliland unification with Somalia is one that is a fact and recorded in the books of history. Time and time again this great nation has been acknowledge by its most important ally its people. The people of Somaliland has acknowledged, accepted and endorsed their democratically elected government through the ballot box in the last two decade.

For Somaliland, a dawn for full Justice is on its Horizon.

UK: Foreign Office makes diplomatic push with string of new embassies (Madagascar, Somalia and Southern Sudan...)

New British embassies are to be opened in El Salvador, Turkmenistan, Madagascar, Somalia and Southern Sudan as part of a radical redrawing of Britain's international diplomatic map.

The Foreign Secretary will use the first anniversary of the Coalition Government today to outline what he termed "the biggest strategic diplomatic advance by Britain in decades". He revealed details yesterday to a meeting in London of hundreds of British ambassadors and high commissioners, who were told of major changes to their network of embassies and consulates abroad.

Somaliland Recognition is Within Reach

The whistleblowers’ site Wikileaks published a leaked Cable of US Embassy Addis Ababa. This is the 7th Cable of its kind. The Cable presents a 1 hour and half long meeting between Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi and Jendayi Frazer, the then U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs that covers a broad ranging issues concerning Kenya, Sudan, Somalia, Somaliland, and the Eritrean border. The meeting, held on Jan. 31/2008, was also attended by Donald Yamamoto, US Ambassador to Ethiopia, Ambassador Courville, Sudan S/E Williamson, AF/SPG Director Lauren Landis.

CNN-- When Sada Mire fled war-torn Somalia  as a frightened teenager, the nation was descending into darkness, mired in the grip of a long civil conflict. But several years later, when she returned to the Horn of Africa as an ambitious archaeologist, her fierce determination and meticulous fieldwork brought to light the region's rich cultural heritage.  In 2007, her archaeological pursuits resulted in the discovery of 5,000-year-old rock art in Somaliland, a breakaway state in the northwest corner of Somalia.

The diaspora has been engaged in conflict resolution and peace building in Somaliland for several decades. The initial resistance to the Siyad Barre regime was in fact organized in the diaspora, with the Somali National Movement being created in London and Jeddah, Saudi Arabia in the early 1980s.

From that time, the Somaliland community in the UK organized demonstrations in front of the Somali embassy in London, and informed the wider western public about the atrocities being committed by the Somali regime. Moreover, members of the diaspora collected funds and sent them to the SNM in eastern Ethiopia.

Somaliland: Dr Mohamed Abdi Gabose leads Somaliland officials to Djibouti for USAid talks

A delegation of ministers, mayors and chief policy makers from Somaliland are in Djibouti this week to meet US Agency for International Development (USAID) representatives in the tiny Horn of African nation.

The delegation of 73 members is chaired by the Interior Minister, Dr Mohamed Abdi Gabose and they are expected to meet with senior USAid representatives in Djibouti. They left Egal International Airport on Wednesday morning and their visit will last seven working days. They will discuss a number of programs the U.S. agency is funding in the country.

 Camels are central to Somaliland culture and sustainability issues, but it wasn’t until my third visit there that I actually saw these important creatures. I learned of their central role in Somaliland as I participated in a joint project between the University of Hargeisa (UOH) and the Center for Justice and Peacebuilding at Eastern Mennonite University. Our partnership was to develop an Institute for Conflict and Peace Studies at UOH and for me and local colleague, Muhyadin Saed, to research the relationship between Customary Law and Conflict Transformation in the Somaliland context. It was the research that more fully introduced me to the importance of camels in Somali culture and how in conflict situations they are used to resolve the conflict and regulate relationships.

'' To me, that’s a perfect way to honor a mom''.

In a few days Americans will celebrate Mother’s Day with roses, chocolates and fine dinners, inducing warm and fuzzy feelings all around. But, in addition, I’ll bet helping mothers less fortunate would also render any mom giddy.

That’s what some Americans have decided to do: commemorate motherhood by saving the lives of mothers halfway around the world — such as in this impoverished nook of Somaliland in the horn of Africa. Beyond celebrating moms with fleeting flowers, they are helping an extraordinary Somali woman, Edna Adan, run a maternity hospital here to make childbirth safer.

After failure of 1960 unity (Somaliland gained its first independence on 26th June 1960 from Britain and united four day later with Italian Somalia on 1st July 1960. Again after decades of armed struggle with "Somalia" it restored its sovereignty on 18th May 1991), the reunification based on language, religion and culture is not at the interest of the region and will lead further bloodshed. "Somalia" adopts territory expansion policy to bring Somali speakers under one government – "Somalia". This policy led Mogadishu regime to invade Ethiopia in 1977 and diplomatic chaos with Kenya.
