- A three-year project aimed at promoting economic development of poor livestock keeping households in Somaliland has been launched. This is by Terra Nuova, in partnership with the Ministries of Livestock and Commerce, the Somaliland Chamber of Commerce Industry and Agriculture (SCCIA) and the Somaliland Quality Control Commission (SQCC). The project is funded by the Royal Danish Embassy in Nairobi.
While presiding over the inception workshop for the project held at the Mansoor Hotel, Hargeisa on 17th and 18th November, 2012, the Secretary General of the Chamber of Commerce and the Director General of the Ministry of Livestock thanked the Royal Danish Embassy for supporting Somaliland strengthen its local professional capacity in livestock research through its support to the IGAD Sheikh Technical Veterinary School (ISTVS) Reference Centre and enhancing access to international and regional markets through strengthening of the county’s product quality management infrastructure.
Terra Nuova is implementing the project in partnership with the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI). The Local Project Partners are the Ministries of Livestock and Commerce; Chamber of Commerce; and the Somaliland Quality Control Commission. The project is targeting livestock traders and the IGAD Sheikh Technical Veterinary School and Reference Centre staff. The final beneficiaries will include the consumers of Somali livestock products in importing countries whose welfare will improve and the Somali livestock producers through increased incomes. The project will run until December 2014.
