World leaders due at Istanbul conference on Somalia

- World leaders and Somali politicians are due to gather in Istanbul on Thursday for a conference on Somalia. The two-day meeting is being hosted by the Turkish government, which has tried to raise Turkey's profile in Somalia since last year's drought there. Traditional elders, business leaders and civil society groups from Somalia are also due to attend. They are expected to discuss the end of the transition period of the UN-backed interim government, due in August. The agenda for the conference is similar to that of numerous big meetings on Somalia in recent times, the BBC's Mary Harper reports.

But Turkey has had more success than other countries in actually bringing about change on the ground, she adds. During last year's famine in Somalia, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his wife went to the Somali capital, Mogadishu - the first visit by a leader from outside Africa for nearly 20 years. Turkey has since been at the forefront of helping build roads, schools and hospitals there. However, some Somali politicians have said Turkey has not been transparent about the conference, failing to consult them about who to invite, our correspondent says.

BOQORKII BUKOODAY!- W/q: Prof. Cabdi-salaam Yaasiin

Sheeko:- Sida sheekooyinkeena dhaqanku tilmaamaan, habardugaaga boqorkooda waa libaax. Libaaxa waxa loo boqray wuxu leeyahay tilmaamu u gaar ah oo uu kaga mudnaaday habar dugaaga intiisa kale, sida awood, geesinmo, garasho, iyo dulqaad. Waa tilmaamaha hogaanka wanaagsan ee aan dad iyo duunyadu ku kala baydhin. In kasta oo uu awood badan leeyahay, boqorka habardugaagu waa noole. Noolahana waxa caado u ah in uu gaboobo ama bukoodo. Bokorkii Libaax ahaa waxa isugu darsamay gabaw iyo bukaan. Wuxu naftiisii u sheegay, “Gabaw dawo ma laha eh; bukaanka waa in aan dawo u helaa.”

Raciyadiisii habardugaag ayuu isugu yeedhay. Wuxu yidhi, “Waad aragtaan oo haddaan boqorkiinii ahay waan bukaa. Haddii aan bukaanka ku raagona ma talin karayo. Markaa waxan doonayaa in dawo aan ku bogsado lay keeno.”

Habardugaagi xagii kaynta ayuu u dhaqaaqay oo dawo ugu doonay boqorkooda buka. Shabeelkii oo geed dawo ah sida ayaa ugu soo horeeyay. In muddo ah ayuu boqorki geedkii cunayay; waxbase waa ka tari waayay. Waraarbihii baa geed kale keenay. Kiina in muddo ah ayuu qaadanayay; isna waxba waa tari waayay. Wiyishii ayaa iyana geed kale keentay. Kiina mudduu qaatay; isna waxaba waa tari waayay. Maroodigii ayaa isna mid kale keenay; kiina waxaba waa ka tari waayay. Xataa, dabagaalihii, oo lugu tilmaamo in uu geedagooye yahay, ayaa isna geed keenay. Kiina waxba waa tari waayay.

The Belgium Somaliland Conference

''For me the highlight of the conference was the high profile speech delivered by Edna Adan on the history of Somaliland as she...'' Mohamed

- Somalilanders in the Diaspora never had it so good. The success of the Washington DC conference was followed by an equally important and inspiring two day conference on Friday 25 and Saturday 26 May 2012; this time the conference was held in Brussels - the European Union capital and was organised by the Somaliland Diaspora Organisation in Belgium and the Somaliland Societies in Europe (SSE)

Over all the two days conference was successful. On Friday 25th of May, the first morning session concentrated on the economy - Abdirashid Duale of Dahabshiil delivered a presentation about his company's economic role in the horn of Africa. This was followed by a presentation by SSE members Jama Musse Jama, Mohamed Omer Maigag & Salma Sheikh on the role of Somali language and culture in preserving Somaliland national identity, the role of the Somaliland Diaspora in promoting Somaliland and the role of Somaliland women in Somaliland politics. A rep from Nomad in the Netherlands also spoke about Nomad and it's work.

Somaliland Small and medium enterprises: Overlooked and under-financed

''Lost Opportunities!

- When I look into the eyes of each one of my student, some of them the brightest in the country, I can sense the thirst for knowledge as they grasp to every word out of my mouth. They display an intrinsic motivation that haven’t seen elsewhere. Motivation that helped them persist through unmatched obstacles and will in the future assist them in the pursuit of their dreams, I have no doubt. But what if some of those obstacles are bigger than themselves like the state of the economy and the dirt of available jobs upon their graduation?

This is where I believe the current administration of Somaliland government has failed graduating students and the generation of youngster in the universities. In all sectors, minerals and metal, manufacturing, services and infrastructure, Somaliland economy is turning into an monolithic entity that is persistently running after the attention of multinationals, exploration companies and infrastructure projects. An effort that is by itself not worthless, but doesn’t have the same effect on local economy and is certainly not complemented by a parallel strategy to tap into the available human capital in the country.

Sheeko Gaaban: Daryeelle iyo Alleelaale (Dabaqalooc); Prof, Cabdi-Salaan Yaasiin

- Nin socdaal ah ayaa waxa uu ku soo baxay nin ku foorara il biyo ah. Ninkii isha biyaha ku fooraray oo la yidhaa Daryeele, ayuu ku soo dhowaaday. Wuxuu arkay inuu Daryeele eegayo dibqallooc (Alleelaale). Dibqalloocii ayaa xaggii isha biyaha u dhaqaaqay oo damacay inuu dhinaca kale biyaha uga tallaabo. Markuu biyihii dhex galay ayuu haftay oo ku dhowaaday in uu dhinto.  Intii aannu dhiman, ayaa Daryeele biyihii gacanta geliyay oo ka soo saary dibqalloocii, isagoo si naxariis leh u haya oo aayar dhulka dhigaya, ayaa uu dibqalloocii qaniinay Daryeele. Inta uu qaniinaydii u adkaystay ayuu dibqalloocii aayar dhulka dhigay.

Dibqalloocii haddana markale ayuu biyihii daf yidhi. Daryeelena intaannu hafan ayuu ka soo saaray biyihii. Haddana isagoo si naxariis leh dhulka u dhigaya ayuu qaniinay. Daryeele haddana qaniinyadii wuu u adkaystay. Dibqalloocii haddana biyihii ayuu galay, Daryeelena waa uu ka soo saary oo dibqalloocii haddana waa uu qaniinay.

Markii dhowr jeer sidaasi dhacday ninkii socotada ahaanna daawanayo arrintan la yaabka leh ee uu la kulmay ayuu Daryeele ku yidhi; “Waar maxaad dibqallooca qaniinyadiisa ugu adkaysanaysaa, maad iska sii daysid ha ku hafto biyaha eh?”

Take a holiday in Somaliland: journey to the state that isn’t – By Magnus Taylor

''Internationally recognised independence seems something of a totemic desire for Somalilanders – everyone I spoke to in Hargeisa passionately believed in it''. Magnus

- Michela Wrong once wrote that you can tell a lot about an African country by the way they issue, or refuse you a visa. This remains true, but as African leaders see the benefits of liberalisation (in a variety of different guises), heralding a stream of hot money flowing in to the continent, there are many other measures of ‘doing business’ that are equally revealing. Commerce in Africa now seems inextricably linked with the mobile phone, so seeing how easy it is to get yourself up and running with a SIM card can be a good measure of a place.

In Addis Ababa I had to take a photocopy of my passport and 2 other headshots to a long queue in a small office, and several days later the stupid thing still didn’t work. I didn’t go back. In Hargeisa, capital of Somaliland, I arrived at my hotel, enquired about the SIM, whereupon the receptionist flicked a new one across the counter, expertly inserted it into my phone, and immediately topped me up with $5 worth of credit via text message. It all took 2 minutes.

Somaliland: Sectors for Potential Investment

- Someone recently asked me about which sectors in Somaliland I thought might be attractive for potential investment. After all, frontier markets are rapidly gaining popularity amongst Western investors, from Myanmar to Nigeria. Particularly in Africa, there are so many different industries that seem promising – infrastructure, food and beverage, oil and minerals, and telecommunications. Private equity firms based primarily in London and Dubai have begun to zero in on neighboring Ethiopia, which has consecutively posted impressive GDP growth, has Africa’s 2nd largest population, and exports a wide variety of agricultural and mineral products.

Somaliland, however, has not received much attention from investors in comparison to other African countries. The ongoing instability and civil war in southern Somalia, as well as the maritime piracy industry off the coast of Puntland, has deterred many would-be investors from putting their money anywhere near Somalia. The few large-scale investments in Somaliland have mostly been funded by successful Somali businessmen from the diaspora.

Although not blessed with mineral wealth, arable land, or a large population, Somaliland does have a few sectors that might interest seasoned investors or savvy entrepreneurs.

Reply to ‘Talks between TFG and Somaliland – Dead on Arrival (DOA)’

Dear Faisal A. Roble,

- I read your opinion entitled:” Talks between TFG and Somaliland – Dead on Arrival (DOA)”. Your article has underlined some of the reasons that forced the talks to collapse but unfortunately omitted to shed some light on the facts on the ground and the realpolitik of some power-hungry Diasporas.

First, the Somali PM’s views towards Somaliland are as meaningless as Puntland’s ramblings towards Somaliland. Sorry to break it down to you!. The PM, Abdiweli Mohamed Ali hardly controls Mogadishu, so in fact, his views towards Mogadishu have little significance, never mind Somaliland. Secondly, the London conference invited Somalia (TFG) and Somaliland to either agree or disagree on the issue of Somali unity.

No one has ever mentioned the countless fly-by-night “administrations” like Khatumo, Awdal, Makhir and so on that the likes of you sprinkle on their articles. Truth is: these “administrations” come and go faster than the scents of cheap clones evaporate. In your previous articles, you have repeatedly written about the doomed SSC violent faction. And today, Khatumo is what drives your motivations.

Farah's the vest man

''FARAH forgot to pack his running vest yesterday but still left the rest of the field behind to win the BUPA London 10k''. The Sun

 - Farah, who won the world 5,000m title last summer, clocked 29.19 to notch up his fourth victory in a row at the event. He finished on The Mall with a sprint to beat Japan’s Arata Fujiwara and pal Scott Overall, who was best man at his wedding and will run the marathon at London 2012.

It was well off his personal best of 27.44mins when he set a course record in 2010 at the event just weeks before he did the European 10,000m and 5,000m double.

But the 29 year-old, who will race arch-rival and defending Olympic 5,000m champion Kenenisa Bekele on the track in Eugene in America on Saturday, insisted: "I've got a big race coming up so I just wanted to do enough to win rather than set a record time. It’s going well, it’s all going in the right direction.

Somaliland Export and Import

- Somaliland Economy: Livestock is the backbone of Somaliland economy and provides subsistence to a considerable proportion of the local population; it contributes to more than 60% of the national GDP and export earnings. This sector is an important supplement to the income and diet of much of the nomadic or semi-nomadic pastoralists. Livestock now regarded as a source of cash income, as well as a traditional unit of social status and pledge of lineage responsibility, and a last resort against famine in the harsh dry seasons.

Marine Corps University Journal: The Somaliland Exception

''Lessons on Postconflict State Building from the Part of the Former Somalia that Works''.
J. Peter Pham

- In the more than two decades since the collapse of the last entity that could be reasonably described as the central government of Somalia, the Texas-sized territory has become the byword for state failure, stubbornly resisting no less than 14 attempts to reconstitute a national government.ge current internationally backed effort, the unelected and ineffectualTransitional Federal Government (TFG),1 just barely manages to maintain a presence in a few of the districts of its bombed-out capital, Mogadishu—and that much only thanks to the presence of the approximately 10,000 Ugandan and Burundian troops that make up the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).

The foreign security force is needed because, while Marine CorpsTFG politicians, led by their president and parliamentary speaker, dicker endlessly over the few remaining assets of the former Somali Democratic Republic, large sections of the country have fallen under the de facto control of the Harakat al-Shabaab al-Mujahideen (“Movement of Warrior Youth,” better known as al-Shabaab).

British traditions boost the de facto state of Somaliland

Somaliland: - It’s the only African country that doesn’t rely on foreign aid from the world’s rich governments. It’s a Muslim country in Africa that has had a functioning democracy for two decades. It’s an oasis of relative peace in one of the most vicious regions of the world, with a growing free-market economy, low inflation and a currency that has been appreciating against the U.S. dollar.

This anomaly of a country, Somaliland, is unrecognized by any other country in the world, even though the World Bank’s chief economist for Africa touts it as a “success story” and the World Bank itself doesn’t formally recognize it. Somaliland’s story is all the more astonishing given that it is officially part of Somalia, a failed state best known for its piracy at sea and al-Shabaab terrorists on land, and given that it declared independence in 1991 after surviving a brutal repression by Somalia’s Marxist dictator that dispersed much of its population to the U.K., Canada and other safe havens.

While much of Somalia descended into an ungovernable anarchy over the past two decades, Somaliland miraculously found its feet. The miracle lay largely in the country’s good fortune to have been in British hands over most of the previous century, and in its good fortune to be deprived of foreign aid. Without foreign aid lavished on leaders in the central government and with a decentralized British colonial parliament, Somaliland’s local governments exercised meaningful rule, citizens were accustomed to local rule, and citizens had no choice but to be self-reliant.

Muslimka Ku Nool Dhulka Gaalada Iyo Dhibta....

Somaliland Oo Lagu Soo Casuumay Shirka Turkey Lana Siiyay Meeqaam La Mid Ah Kii London

- Xukuumada Somaliland ee madaxda uu ka yahay madaxweyne Axmed maxamed Maxauud Siilaanyo, ayaa si rasmi ah loogu soo casuumay shirka arrimaha Soomaaliya ee Stanbul, iyadoo Somaliland lagu marti qaaday meeqaam la mid ah kii shirkii London. Sida Jamhuuriya ku heshay xog dhab ah oo kasoo baxday wasaarada arrimaha dibadda ee Turkiga, waxa qoraalkaasi lagu xusay in inkastoo aanay dowlada Turkigu aqoonsanayn, haddana lagu qaabili doono weftiga Somaliland uga qaybgali doona protocol ahaan mid la mid ah kii shirkii London ee bishii February. Sidoo kale waxa lagu sheegay qoraalkaasi in xukuumada Somaliland arrimaha uu kale hadli doono wasiirka arrimaha dibadda ee Turkiga Prof Dr Axmed Davutoglu oo lagu wado inuu kullan la yeesho xukuumada Somaliland dhawaan.

Ma jiro wali xog dhab ah oo kasoo baxday dhinaca xukuumada, hase yeeshee waxa la filayaa in shirkaasi ay Somailand uga qayb gali doonaan wasiiro sar sare oo ka tirsan xukuumada Madaxweyne Siilaanyo, hase yeeshee madaxweyne Siilaanyo aanu tagi doonin. Waxaanay xukuumada Turkiga si gooni ah uga wada hadli doonaan sidii Somaliland qayb uga heli lahayd kaalamada Turkigu ugu tallogaleen Somaliland iyo Soomaaliya.

Dr Mohamed Abdilahi addresses the Foreign Affairs Committee of the European Parliament

''This “reinforces Somaliland’s vision of a dialogue between two separate entities, Somalia and Somaliland...''. Dr Mohamed

– The Foreign Minister of the Republic of Somaliland, Dr Mohamed A. Omar, this week had a meeting with the Foreign Affairs Committee of the European Parliament. In his statement to the Committee, Dr Omar drew attention to the contrasting fortunes of Somaliland and Somalia since the former declared independence in 1991. He spoke of “the emergence of a peaceful and democratic Somaliland through a painstaking process of reconciliation at the local level. At the same time, governance collapsed in Somalia, leading directly to the problems confronting the Horn of Africa today, namely terrorism, piracy, and hunger.”

Dr Omar declared that: “Somaliland has recently re-engaged with the international community, in order to play its part in solving the ongoing challenges in neighbouring Somalia. Last month’s London Conference represented an important milestone in Somaliland’s diplomacy.”

- The dire warnings of the head of the United Nations Political Office for Somalia (UNPOS), Mr. Augustine Mahiga, acting in his assumed capacity as the de facto President of the failed Somali state, are nothing but a shameful camouflage to distract the international public opinion from his personal failure on the intractable quagmire of southern Somalia.

The unfortunate loss of life in Somaliland on May 15, 2012 is a matter of no concern to the UNPOS. For the past two decades, the state of Somaliland has developed a hybrid system of conflict resolution without any assistance or external intervention. The metamorphosis of this unique mechanism has been the envy of the global village and that is what sets the state of Somaliland apart from the anarchy afflicted rump state of Somalia.

Watch out Somaliland! Dr Mahiga, The Hypocrite, Is On a Dangerous Mission To Sabotage Your Achieved Tranquillity And Harmony.

- It is beyond belief a doctor and an experienced man in African politics to release a meaningless statement over a very sensitive situation. The clash between the patriotic military personnel and their mislead cousins which caused the death of both sides was misfortunate and shocking. This horrendous and heartbreaking event was not needed to happen in this peace-loving nation. However, the question everyone is asking, “ What was the motive of the “Press Release” meant to achieve?”

Dr Mahiga did not give a chance the situation to settle nor he did not respect the nation as whole instead he belittled our intelligent members of both houses, house of Elders and Representatives. Worst of all, he did not respect the professional judgement from our independent judges and judicial system.

The name, Dr Mahiga, has been appearing in Somali affairs for many years as a special UN envoy to Somalia. Unfortunately we have not had any tangible result from his mission. If DR Mahiga has the ability and honesty to help Somalis he has the future of the majority of Somalis on his desk. This small country that was recognised as “the beacon of democracy” in a misfortunate continent dominated by tyrant leaders surely does not need interference from outside, particularly from UN rep.

Why not recognize independent Somaliland?

Somaliland independence somalia 2012 5 21

''Since then Somalia has been mired in chaos and violence. But Somaliland has succeeded in establishing a functioning government, with a constitution, defined borders and a flag''. Globalpost

LEWIS CENTER, Ohio — Twenty-one years ago this month, Somaliland was reborn when the tyrannical regime of Siad Barre collapsed. Since then, the people of Somaliland, which is the northern part of Somalia, have established a country built on the principles of freedom and democracy. But they still await recognition by the world community including the United States.

Somaliland first won its independence from the British Empire on June 26, 1960, an event soon followed by recognition as a sovereign entity by the United Nations and 35 countries, the US among them. But then, a week later, Somaliland voluntarily entered a union with what was at the time known as Italian Somaliland, to the south, creating modern-day Somalia. This was in response to the dreams of nationalists who wanted to unite the lands in which Somalis lived in the Horn of Africa region.

Anesthesia in children linked to learning disabilities?

Boston—The jury is still out on the effects of anesthesia in children who undergo surgery at a young age, according to Constance S. Houck, MD. Multiple animal studies have demonstrated neuroapoptosis and long-term learning deficits in young animals after administration of general anesthesia, but population-based studies in humans have been far less clear.

A higher incidence of learning disabilities has been found in a cohort of children who have had multiple anesthetics before the age of 4 years but it is unclear whether this is due to effects of the anesthetic or other underlying medical issues that necessitated the multiple surgeries, said Dr. Houck, senior associate in perioperative anesthesia, Children’s Hospital Boston and associate professor of anesthesia, Harvard Medical School, Boston.

Without definitive studies suggesting a viable alternative, no changes in practice are currently proposed although there is an urgent need for more studies, she added.

The possibility that anesthesia can cause subtle neurologic changes in young children has been a concern for some time. Over the past 10 years, bits of information from various studies have caused concern. Recent studies have implicated both inhaled and intravenous anesthetics as potentially neurotoxic to young animals, Dr. Houck noted.

Somaliland’s mobile payments boom

''As Somaliland celebrates its 21st birthday, Africa editor Monty Munford reports on the nation’s mobile payment revolution.

- Today is the 21st birthday of self-proclaimed African republic Somaliland, which was born after an ill-fated union with Somalia that was compounded by the collapse of that country’s political system in 1991 and the overthrow of despised dictator Siad Barre.

Somaliland was previously a UK protectorate known as British Somaliland, which in 1960 became the first African country to transfer power from the military to civilians after independence, until it cleaved itself to its bigger neighbour, Somalia. After years of tribal tensions, a savage civil war broke out, the Somalis were finally ousted and Somaliland retreated to its pre-independence border.

The country remains unrecognised by the rest of the world, and the land of 3.5 million people is dependent on its diaspora for its budget. But the country is peaceful, there is a reasonably free press, a free market economy and two years ago, an election saw the incumbent president hand over power without many guns being fired.

Permanent homes for 300 displaced persons in Somaliland

Government and local officials, donors and UNHCR on 21 May 2012 marked the official opening of the 50 first permanent homes in Burao built by NRC together with the local people. Photo: NRC/Astrid Sehl

A Japanese-funded NRC/UNHCR shelter project including 50 permanent shelters was today handed over to the community in Aden Suleiman (aka Aadan Salleebaan) settlement for internally displaced people in Burao, Somaliland: Press release;-

A total of 50 permanent shelters, which will benefit 300 people, were constructed by members of the community with the training, technical assistance and supervision of NRC. The Somaliland Government was also instrumental in the success of the project.

Each home consists of two rooms and outdoor space totalling 144 square metres. NRC provided the design, tools, materials and training for the locally recruited labourers, many from the displaced communities and others from the host community. Shelters provided for internally displaced people in Somalia are often made from corrugated iron sheeting (CGI). Therefore it was a significant improvement for the displaced people in Burao to be able to move into proper brick structures with lockable doors, thereby providing safety and security for IDPs, especially women, children and other vulnerable groups including the elderly and people with disabilities.

An Interview with Sultan Choudhury, Islamic Bank of Britain

- IBB came into existence in August 2004 when the Financial Services Authority (FSA) granted the Bank its license. In September 2004 IBB became a UK publicly listed company on the Alternative Investment Market (AIM). The Bank’s vision was to offer Shari’ah compliant retail financial services and the journey began when the capital was raised by investors in the UK and the Middle East. The first step was to set up the infrastructure, processes and products as well as bring together the team.

This was followed by the setting up of a branch network. IBB now has a national branch and agency network in key locations including London, the Midlands and North West. To complement this, and to enable Shari’ah-compliant banking to be accessible to consumers across the UK, IBB also developed its Smart Banking facilities, i.e. telephone and internet banking.

Extensive product development work has also been carried out since the Bank started life. As a result IBB now claims to offer the largest range of Shari’ah-compliant retail financial products in the UK to more than 50, 000 customers.
