- No force has the power to force the people of Somaliland to be unified with Somalia against their will. Neither the Siiranyo government, the parliament, nor an individual or individuals has the power the tamper with the peoples’ will. At the end of the day the will of the people will supersede everything else. We know the western colonial powers tried to change Iraq, and Afghanistan in the recent past, and everything ended in disaster.
We know they have spent billions of dollars in that effort. Moreover, attempts with tremendous military dimension were experimented in Vietnam, Korea, Algeria, Cuba and countless other places, and again everything ended up in failure. We also know what had happened to the people of Somaliland when they threw away their hard earned independence in 1960.
We also know the military junta of Somalia has waged a massive military campaign that was indiscriminate, heinous and excessive in nature against the people of the Republic of Somaliland, and tens of thousands of innocent people were perished, despite all that, at the end of the day the people’s will has prevailed and defeated the forces of oppression and injustice.
Moreover, we know the power of the former colonial powers who dominated the world for the last sixty years has significantly shrunk. Those who think somebody somewhere will force the people of Somaliland to change their sacred decision for independence is dreaming.
Anyone who thinks the hand of the people of Somaliland will be forced by the now diminished colonial powers of the yesteryear is engaged in a pipe dream.
The fact of the matter is neither a diminished colonial power such as Britain, Turkey the former sick man of Europe, or any other member of the cash-strapped western powers including the United States has neither the wherewithal nor the power to force the people of Somaliland to something they do not want.
From that back drop, I advice the leaders and people of Somalia (former Italian Somaliland) to mind their own business and take care of their country and people. Somaliland independence and sovereignty is sacrosanct, permanent and not subject to negotiations.
I would like to sign out my piece with the legendary Thomas Jefferson’s Declaration of Independence:
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
