- On Dec third 2011, there happened a great discourse on Somaliland at the Mosiac Restaurant in Ottawa , Canada. After a wonderful dinner and a friendly chat at the Mosiac Restaurant , where over 40 people attended , everybody descended to the basement meeting room and the event entered its second and most interesting phase of discussions. After verses of Quran read by Abdisabuur Sh Ali Jowhar . The panel was moderated by Dr Mohamud Tani , the Guest Speaker was Ambassidor Mohamed Sh Hassan Nuuriye. -former Somaliland Ambassador to Ethiopia and an ex- Somali Ambassidor to both Canada and Nigeria.
Also in the panel were.
1- Mohamud Awil Ibrahim – An specialist in Finance and a retired high officer of the ADB ( african Development Bank)
2- Abdirahman Hassan Awl.- An Internationally acclaimed consultant on Banking, Development and Management. He worked also at both the Islamic Bank and the ADB as a top executive.
3- Mohamed Abdillahi Yassin – An ex top executive at the ADB and a fellow of the Kennedy School at Harvard.
4- Dr. Mohamed Nuh Ali – Former Dean of the Lafoole College of Education and presently a lecturer of History at Carleton University , Ottawa.
The Ambassador presented a highly enriched dissertation based on his experience and knowledge on the entity and the reality of the existence of Somaliland as an independent and sovereign state. He tackled the question of the conditions that Somaliland fulfills so they might call themselves a state. He stated that if a country has
A- A Government that has a tax system and a legal system.
B- That Government can maintain the security of its people .
C- If that country and its Government has a defined boundary that it controls.
D- That Government can maintain the security of its borders both land . air and sea.
Ambassador Mohamed stated that Somaliland has met all that conditions and more. It therefore qualifies as a sovereign and independent state. Somaliland has also has the bonuses of being stable in a region of turmoil, and democratic beyond any doubt. The Ambassador then asked the question of this Sovereign nation which is an example to all is not being recognized. He highlighted several obstacles to the road to recognition , and advised some outstanding recommendations to tackle these obstacles. One of them was the creation of National Council of experienced and educated people who should be tasked to draft a road map for recognition.
He also stated the importance of encouraging foreign investments. He stated that foreign investors are the best Ambassadors that can lobby for the countries they invest. However , he pointed out that to attract investments we should have good banking systems , efficient civil services and greatly enhancing and advertising the secure environment inside Somaliland. The Ambassador proposed that Somalilanders should know that we are in a very condition even without recognition , and we sit back and think how to act in a better way to tackle the question of recognition.
The discussion was again taken by the other members of the panel and each of them congratulated the Ambassador on the quality and the breadth of his presentation , and how we have to continue learned discussions of this caliber. Each of them pinpointed areas we may focus on the topic of development and recognition and the discussion was ahead of what is normally discussed in other gatherings. Also Ibrahim Mead who is on of the leading elders of Ottawa was invited to make his contributions , and he shed light on the struggle between ignorance and knowledge, and he warned that we should be vigilant that the ignorance should not dominate the knowledge in Somaliland.Comments are closed.
