Obituary of Dr Abdulshakur Sheikh Ali Jowhar (Brief Biography)

''Inaalilaahi wa inaa ileyhi raajicuun''

Brief Biography of Dr. Abdulshakur Sh. Ali Jowhar

- Hearing the sudden death of an old friend and school mate was so shocking and sad. Today is a very sad day of all the people of Somaliland, and particularly the people of Borma city where Dr. Abdul Shakur Sh.Ali Jowhar was hailed from. Dr. Abdulshaku Sh. Ali Jowhar was the son of a preeminent religious scholar and a legend, Sh. Ali Jowhar.

The great doctor has descended from a prominent family whose history spans back to the ancient Muslim city of “Adarri” (Harrar) and Zeila. Let me first of all take the time to send my heartfelt condolence to the large Sheikh Ali Jowhar family. Dr. Abdulskakur came from an extended and very large family that resides in several Horn of Africa countries such as Somaliland, Djibouti and Ethiopia. His father Sheikh Ali Jowhar was a well-referred, preeminent religious scholar who was so famous in the Horn of Africa and beyond.

His father was not only famous but was a “legendary” religious scholar who spent so much time in spreading Islam through the Horn of Africa. Dr. Abdi Shakur went to both elementary and Middle school in the city of Borama, the Republic of Somaliland. His successfully completed his high school was in prestigious Amoud Secondary school, the modern Amoud University. He successfully received a scholarship to learn medicine from Egypt where he attended and successful graduated from a medical college in Alexandria, Egypt. He has completed his medical school and became a physician from a prestigious medical college in Egypt.

When he became a medical Doctor, he was immigrated to Canada where he started practicing his specialty (psychiatry) medicine. While practicing medicine, He went back to Graduate School in the medical field of psychiatry in Canada. For nearly 20 years he was practicing psychiatry in both Canada and the United States; but Toronto, Canada was his home base city. Moreover, Dr. Abdulshakur was a man of multi-talents, he was not a psychiatrist also, but was also great advocate and defender of the Somaliland cause.

He was also an avid writer in international politics in general, and the Horn of Africa and middle in particular. One can read his in depth political analyses comprising of so many political topics in the internet. His lost will open a gigantic void in Somaliland. In his short life, he was a man who touched huge number of people and he will surely be missed. His family and him recently moved back to Somaliland and opened a private medical practice in Hargeisa. We will surely miss him. May God bless his soul!
