“Moving forward, Somaliland”

- For two decades, the world has witnessed the peace, stability and growth of Somaliland. In 2012 Somaliland stands head and shoulders above many countries in the fields of democracy, human rights and economic development, therefore seeking international recognition has become a side issue to the real progress made by Somalilanders of all political, social, tribal and economical persuasions.

At the same time, Somaliland has many challenges, notably in healthcare, infrastructure, education and employment. Challenges they maybe but the people have equipped themselves to face them, and surely this is a challenge that is worth winning. The challenge of any society is peace, the challenge of every government is to facilitate a peaceful environment for its citizens. In its entirety, this seems to be the case in Somaliland.

In light of the recent development of real progress, between Somaliland and the Somali government, it is clear the opposition to progress only comes from few people in the entire Somali peninsula. In the interest of fairness and democracy, everyone has the right to air any concerns, whether pro or anti Somaliland, however the real enigma is the extend in entire people have been prepared to distort the truth. There are now sites dedicated to the hatred and destruction of Somaliland, the negative press has no basis.

It seems clear to everyone, in a classic sense, it is almost like police stop and search in western societies, where the victims of crimes sometimes feel like the perpetrators. The people of the north are the victims of mass genocide. If anyone challenges this notion, then you are advised to visit the mass graves in Hargaisa and many other locations through the country. Now to many observers it seems like the people of Somaliland committed the crimes. Secondly if the notion of brotherhood can keep people tied together then why can one not share a house with his brother, his wife, his children and so on. The point here is you don’t have to live together to be brothers.

With war and bloodshed, only comes misery and all the other evils associated with human conflict. The problems facing the region are truly astronomical. Instead of importing arms and continuing to fight, lets step back and see the bigger picture. To my brothers in SSC, for every conflict, you slow down the progress of your people. Building infrastructure, schools, roads and other international development projects will greatly increase the quality of peoples live rather than tribalism and wars conducted in the name of people that have not been to the towns they claim to be from for the past 50 years.

We must also realise that borders are just there to make international boundaries and as much as I hate telling someone, for the millionth time the “land” does not split, in other words there are no tectonic shifts, the earth’s crust and everything that comes with it remains.

My proposal to all Somalilanders is this. With or without recognition, the country has turned the corner. For the first time in history we can have a country that has a real chance of developing. I also strongly believe Somalia will be the first to benefit. To the people who claim Somaliland is for Isaaqs only, please think again because that argument is full of hatred without any foundation. The slander that goes on only makes every Somalilander more determined to succeed.

As for Somalilanders, please keep your best kept secrets under wrap, there is no reason to gloat at our achievements. We should also work very hard in helping our brothers to one day be very peaceful and enjoy the freedoms we had for so long. Remember the suffering of children struck by famine and all the victims of senseless wars, the damage to the psyche of a nation. From the ashes, there is hope, that hope is a peaceful Somaliland side by side with a peaceful Somalia.
