H.E. Minister Zamzam A Aden: A Model of Courage.

- Human life goes through subsequent stages with experience thrive, the journey from home to the school is one that has its own circumstances which based on the standard of living during that period. Parents want their children to be an educated because they know with education their children will have a better life in the future, parents like their children to be decent and dignified ones among the community.

Father goes to the market to eke out your life and mother prepares food and other necessary things in the home, both of them have the same attitude towards your progress in life. Father doesn’t feel the tiredness and hardships he experiences during the daily life activity because of your sake. On the other hand mother gets up early in the morning to get you prepared to the school, both of them give an encouragement to you to attain your target but the question is, are we on the right track?

You are a student heading for a long road ahead of you to make your life beautiful and brilliant. You are tired, thirsty, and hungry but all of these destitutions are removed by the encouragement of your parents. Encouragement is what makes difference and gives many families and societies around the world a chance to be developed than their nobles, finding a living example for you is something valuable.

When I was a student at Sheekh Bashir Primary & Intermediate School in 1994, I remember a little proportion of my peers went to schools, sheltering under the shadow of trees and collapsed bare houses. We were squatting on plain areas and had no uniforms, books, and used to sit on old tin cans. In that era the civil wars Shattered many schools and learning facilities, and disturbed the education of thousands of children in every region in Somaliland.

Since the ministry of education has announced free education at primary and intermediate, there is a growth of enrolment in public schools. Today more than 35% of Somaliland’s primary school age children go to school every day, while the majority of Somaliland’s secondary and professional technical schools works in good manner.

Khadra Jama, a mother of eight children told me “With the support from the ministry of education, life has much better for my children, because a lot of my children’s needs were met and so I was able to send my kids to schools. One year ago I wouldn’t competent to send my children to school”

In addition to that, the ministry increased the salary of school teachers and employed 1500 new teachers’ at all public primary and intermediate schools in Somaliland. The educational improvement among the schools is a clear signs for the educational growth led by the minister. All the above mentioned progress is attributed by the government, especially to the minister of education Zamsam Abdi Adem

During my visit at Biyo Dhacay Primary & Intermediate School, Abdillahi Jama , 12 years old, a class seven said: I feel wonderful, not only because I have so many friends in the school, but because they are so different background families. I encourage other students to come to the library to use their time wisely.

It was an early morning in a Ramadan at 7: 00 am, my friends Muse Dalmar, Abdilatif Osman and I paid a visit to the ministry of education to talk the minister about an opening of a new library which Biyo Dhacay Secondry School will have. After a warm receiving she showed us respect and parental feelings, and we realized that we had an honest people ready for doing something to their coming generation.

We saw that the Ministry of Education was different from other ministries for her work on that time while others were closed or didn’t work. Many people were line up to encounter with the minister to talk with their aim of visit. They were happy to have a meeting with the minister at her office and the minister herself has not been finishing the work until she meets with the last individual. While I was in the ministry I heard appreciation from two foreign persons who had an appointment with the minister and they appreciated for her availability.

Mothers of Somaliland believe that the minister of education Madam Zamzam Abdi Adem is a passionate and reliable person, because during her term in office she has succeeded Elementary and Intermediate Schools to be without charge, in Somaliland many mothers are breadwinners of the family by virtue of either their children are orphans or their husbands are jobless so making schools free has lifted a big weight from the mothers and was appreciated by the minister.

Up to the minister of education was appointed to the office, a great change about the Somaliland’s Education system has happened. Apart from her travel and encouragement to the schools there are also new buildings and learning materials offered by her ministry, most of the people thank for her visit to the far places where it was difficult to go or seemed to be forgotten to know their educational problems and listen to her people’s complaints as well. Actually a real change is visible from all kinds of education in Somaliland.

I visited one morning at Gacan Libah Secondary School where once I was a student; I saw lots of an educational improvement made by the school. That morning I encountered the school where one of the student giving a speech to other students by urging to them the importance of education and its value, as well as there are students who pay the fees of their poor classmate students.

It is also worth mentioning the recent visit which secondary students met with the president at his office in the presidential palace, that historical meeting was backed by the minister of education. The students had been in the office of presidential palace for hours and they expressed their delightful feelings and at the same time visited all department offices in the palace.

They were widely welcomed by the vice president and minister of presidential palace, each gave them an inspirational speech and a high level of hospitality, the minister of presidential palace gave them medals embroidered with the sign of our nation to show their patriotic feelings. The vice president received the students at his office as well by saying “ it would be better to have a visit before now to bear witness the difference between now and before, we started furnishing and equipping with governmental offices, buildings, airports and so on because these are the mirrors reflecting our nation”

The minister of education Zamsam Abdi Adem said” the students saw presidential palace staff who were slightly older them and it gave expectations to the students that they would work tomorrow in the palace”

And finally the president himself welcomed the students at his office and said” you are the ones who will be taking responsibility and working here in the coming future’

Students’ spokeswoman Asma Ismail expressed her good feeling towards the palace and said” I always heard about the ministries’ conference hall but today I myself supposed to be the minister when I sat in the position of the minister”

The feeling of Asma touched the emotions of me and other students wherever they were, they recognized that they could go to the presidential palace as Asma and her friends did and would ask the president something about his duty on the country’s affairs.

Actually it was a historic meeting which created expectations among the students and those who have got a chance to meet their leaders face to face. These students are so lucky and it was a right step taken by the leaders of the country.

Honorable president, you and your minister of education have entitled to join the genius book of Somaliland because of the ray of sunshine you have provided for the students. As always and even now, you and the minister’s work are carved in our memory and still remains in our heart.

Finally, Let us remember the wisdom says, “Student are like young plants, they need to be cared for , if you take good care of your plants, you will have strong plants and a good harvest. It is the same with students, if you look after them.
