Cheetah smugglers nabbed in Somaliland’s first court conviction of wildlife criminals

- These two cheetah cubs, kept in appalling conditions, were confiscated by conservation authorities in Somaliland at the same time as the independent territory celebrated its first formal court conviction of wildlife criminals operating out of north-east Africa.

Somaliland is the blade of the Somalia hatchet on the Gulf of Aden. It functions as an independent state following a unilateral declaration of independence in 1991. It is widely suspected as the main trade route for smugglers through the Port of Berbera for wildlife and game products originating from Ethiopia and Kenya. Conservation authorities have recorded 47 confirmed instances of cheetahs being smuggled through Somaliland for rich Arabs from 2011 to 2017. However, it is estimated that as many as 300 cheetahs are taken through Somaliland every year.

U.S. Neoconservatives Suddenly Concerned about Somaliland’s Independence

- Last week, Michael Rubin — a resident scholar at the influential neoconservative think tank American Enterprise Institute (AEI) — published a long-form opinion piece urging the United States to recognize the independent region of Somaliland: a breakaway region in the Horn of Africa.

Rubin makes a strong case for recognizing Somaliland’s independence by pointing out its history suffering colonialism and exploitation at the hands of the West. He cites Somaliland’s remarkable security status when compared to neighboring Somalia. But since when have neoconservatives — especially a former Pentagon official like Rubin — ever actually cared about self-determination?

Oh, one other thing: Russia might get to them first and that’s bad, according to Rubin.

UNPO: Somaliland Briefing Note 2018

- Since it declared independence from Somalia in 1991, Somaliland has developed into one of the Horn of Africa’s most prosperous and stable democracies. Despite having its own flag, parliament, currency and national identity, Somaliland’s lack of international recognition as an independent state has brought extra challenges for the country in dealing with the issues that unfortunately characterise the region. This includes difficulties receiving aid and relief work, which puts their population at risk in times of natural disasters and droughts as well as severely limiting opportunities for economic development. Although Somaliland has an exceptional record in fighting piracy and fundamentalist groups such as Al-Shabaab, the extreme poverty and lack of opportunities make terrorist groups more appealing to desperate young people. Thus, the recognition of Somaliland is an essential step to ensuring the country’s continued development as well as the stability of the region. In reality, Somaliland’s main obstacle is not the world’s animosity, but its indifference.

Khabiir, 11-sano u shaqeeyay GOOGLE oo sarifle ka noqday Hargaysa!

The US needs to recognize Somaliland before Russia does

"Somaliland has been separate from Somalia far longer than it has been part of Somalia. In many ways, it is like Taiwan, which China claims as its own even though the period of direct Chinese rule over Taiwan was surprisingly short.." Micheal Rubin

- When most Americans think about Somalia, they picture Black Hawk Down, pirates, starving kids, al Qaeda, and urban chaos. More than 148 million Americans (almost half of the U.S. population) were born after Somalia’s last stable government collapsed in 1991. But for Somalis living in the northern region of Somaliland, the chaotic perception of their situation has always been false. Somaliland has for more than a quarter century been de facto independent. Long ignored by policymakers, however, it may soon find itself to be the latest geopolitical battlefield between the United States and Russia.

Xisbiga Wadani, Doorashada soo socota wuu guulaysan karaa hadii uu 3-shay wax ka qabto.

"Xisbiga iyo falsafada uu ku qotomo oo la badbaadiyo ayaa ka khayr badan in hamiga qof leeyahay la badbaadiyo! Sidaas awgeed, waxa ay iigu muuqataa in la helo cid kale (hogaan cusub)..." Cali

Classrooms reopen in Somaliland for first time since civil war

SOS Children’s Villages have completed a classroom building project in Somaliland which will enable hundreds of children to receive an education in safety. Half of the classrooms at the 31st of May School in Hargeisa were destroyed by bombs during the Somaliland civil war for independence and have not been in use for twenty years. The school can now accommodate almost 1,000 students – 270 more than previously.

The renovation project, completed in partnership with the Big Foundation, has brought six classrooms back into use and improved facilities throughout the school – including the installation of toilets, running water and wheelchair access so that disabled children in the region are not denied their right to equal educational opportunities.

Oil and gas exploration activities in Somaliland

- Somaliland – a country in the horn of Africa – has become a hotspot in oil and gas exploration activities in East Africa. Somaliland’s exciting geological and geopolitical significance has led international oil and gas companies to snap up onshore and offshore exploration licenses making it the new frontier in oil and gas exploration in the region.

TGS–NOPEC Geophysical Company has been at the forefront of oil and gas exploration activities, from the offshore acquisition of, approximately, 5,100 km of 2-D seismic, gravity, and magnetic data, to the onshore acquisition of 34,000 kilometers of high-resolution aeromagnetic data covering all Somaliland’s oil basins. The processing and the interpretation of TGS data has been completed which provided the structural elements of the area and will cause the subsequent development of leads and plays.

Somalia is a different story from Somaliland

- Today most of the South Somalia is ruled by IGAD, AU, UN, the powerless government of Somalia controls the Capital City of Mogadishu by less than 10% of the city. The International community suggested that Somaliland government should negotiate with the shaky and powerless government in Mogadishu over its independence.

The ongoing Talks between Somaliland and the powerless government of Mogadishu had finally collapsed after Somalia's inclusion of officials of Somaliland nationality in its delegation. Both sides agreed before that it would not be included representatives who originated from Somaliland, but Mogadishu deliberately included its delegation people who Somalilanders believe that they are mercenaries and are criminals from their own country.

REFLECTIONS ON BERBERA PORT CONCESSION AGREEMENT IN ANTICPATION OF CHANGINGES IN THE HORN OF AFRICA

- The Berbera Tripartite Concession Agreement which Somaliland entered with the DP World of the United Arab Emirates and the Ethiopian Government is hailed by many Horn of Africa international analysts as a game changer: for Ethiopia as a major breakthrough in securing a stake to the strategic Berbera Port; for Somaliland in opening its first major inlet to the global economy and in creating a significant potential to break the political deadlock for its quest for international recognition, and for the Emirates, it is a major achievement in its drive to project as a regional power in the Horn of Africa & Middle East geopolitical overlap. Internally in Somaliland, the deal attracted a lot of controversy in the beginning, mainly due to the lack of transparency in its incubation period, and perhaps because the financial figure mentioned in the deal (US$ 442 million), was below the expectation of the Somaliland people.

So, why is Somaliland Africa's most successful non-country?

- When I told a friend recently that I was going to Hargeisa, he looked at me in a way that told me immediately that he had no clue what I was talking about. He eventually asked: “Where is that?”

Many asked me this same question in 2014 when I first went to Hargeisa.

So in many ways, here in East Africa, as elsewhere in the world, I suppose, Hargeisa remains an unknown quantity nearly 30 years since Somaliland, the country whose capital city it is, broke away from the rest of Somalia and declared itself independent.

DP-World: Somaliland investment

- DP World has a number of investments in East Africa, including one in Berbera, Somaliland. The region's self-proclaimed independence remains unrecognized by any country or international organization.

However, Bin Sulayem told CNBC that "he had no issue in investing with the autonomous government in Somaliland and there was no need to go through the official Somali government.

"The argument between Somaliland and Somalia clearly recognizes that the economic activity in the region belongs to Somaliland. What we have done is within the law."
