Somaliland Vs Somalia: Courtesy Doesn't Cause Money.

''I have observed that the Sovereignty of Somaliland is the most debated subject in the Somali websites and at the same time, this subject creates the most absurd..'' Yusuf Dirir

- Decades ago I used to live in a country, where more than anything else, people used to enjoy trading good humour and stimulating face to face debates. The natives of that country had one unwritten strict code for debates or even heated arguments about no matter what – that precept was turning your back in protest to whoever offends you and walking away from him not saying a word back to him.

Somaliland: An unrecognised state

''Hargeisa’s best-known landmark, a war memorial comprising a crashed MiG fighter jet, serves to remind visitors that it has been reconstructed almost from scratch since the late 1980s''. Expatriate

- Officially, Somaliland does not exist. The state goes unrecognised by the United Nations, despite having functioned as a largely stable and peaceful self-governing democracy since secession from war-torn Somalia back in May 1991. And its sovereignty remains unacknowledged by the African Union, even though it is not truly a breakaway state, but a recreation of British Somaliland, a protectorate whose boundaries had existed for a full 75 years before it formed a union with the former Italian Somaliland upon independence in 1960.

Sheeko: '' Ma Biciid Ma Faras?! Prof C/salaam Yaasiin

- Boqoradii Shiinaha mid ka mid ah ayaa dhintay. Intaan ciddii boqortooyada dhaxalka u lahayd la saarin carshiga (kursiga boqornimada), ayaa ninkii Wasiirka Kowaad u ahaa qorshe uu awoodda boqortooyada ku hantiyo dejiyay. Wuxu shirqoolay ninkii carshiga xaqa u lahaa; waxaanuu boqoray nin kale oo uu gacanta ku hayo.

Wasiirkii Kowaad boqorkii cusbaa gacanta ayuu ku qabtay; isaga oo ku gabanaya boqorkana, taladii dalka isaga ayaa qabsaday. Hasa yeeshee, weli ma werwer beelin. Maxaa yeelay, wuxu dareen ka qabay inay halisi kaga timaado golaha wasiirada. Ka dibna qorshihii labaad ayuu dejiyay.

Oldest UAE illegal's dismay at having to leave his home of 50 years

Mohammed Jamua Yousuf arrived in the emirate in the 1950s but has been without a residency visa since 1992. Jeffrey E Biteng / The National

AJMAN // Mohammed Jamua Yousuf was a young man when he left his home in Somalia and travelled to Ajman to make a new life for himself. Now, more than half a century later, he could soon be leaving forever.

The 74-year-old arrived in the emirate in the 1950s but has been without a residency visa since 1992. For more than 20 years he has been living illegally, in constant fear of being jailed or deported. Now, the two-month amnesty for illegal residents has presented the former soldier with the chance to return to his native country without facing hefty fines or fees, but at a cost of leaving his home in the UAE.

Somaliland Is An Oasis Of Peace In Horn of Africa

'
The Somalilanders were the most important traders, sailors and internationalists on the Eastern shores of the Red Sea..''. Aadan

- Siilanyo who took the helmet of Somaliland nation in peaceful in 2010, while the wreckage of destroyed fighter jets still lies on Hargeisa’s bumpy airstrip, the scars of the conflict are rapidly fading, as bullet-riddled ruins are placed by a spurt of new buildings. It is a sensitive matter for fiercely independent Somaliland, keen to win favour with the international community by showing its commitment to fight piracy, but also wary since the conflicts are from Somalia. Even if we do not yet have the recognition of the international community we engage with world, and we hope and expect recognition will come soon.

''Somaliland''. East Africa's Red Sea Corridor. Could It Become a Major Energy

- Africa is increasingly becoming a major player in the   world oil & gas game. Its proven oil reserves topped 132 Billion barrels in 2011 and are 9% of world reserves. Oil production stood last year at 8.8BBOD (10%) of world production. Current proven gas reserves are nearly 14.5 TCM (7% of world reserves) and gas production is up to 202 BCMD (6.17%).

These reserves and production numbers is currently dominated by West and North African countries, but that is all about to change once recent oil & gas discoveries in East Africa such as in Mozambique, Uganda, Madagascar and recently Kenya come online.

A year in Somaliland: ''What I've learned about water in Hargeisa

''I have read in the papers that there are plans to dig more wells in Hargeisa, funded by the EU. But the fact is at least 45%...''. Joanna

- I remember in Belfast the Christmas before last, when pipes froze and burst, water poured into streets, and many of us were without water for days, relying on bottled water that we had to collect from water stations. Many people said at the time, and I was one, how it made them appreciate water was not to be taken for granted. But it has taken living here and observing how people live in a country that experiences serious droughts for it to be brought home to me what a precious resource water is.

Somaliland: Watershed Legal Services 2012 Annual Report

''This morning we released the 2012 Annual Report. Here’s an excerpt:

- 2012 was a year of stability above all else. Our entire staff remained unchanged throughout the year. Our revenue and costs remained roughly stable through the course of the year. It seems that Somaliland was also experiencing a similar course to us. Although there were local counsel elections during 2012, there were not so many changes in the political sphere. As the private sector continues to steadily grow, the job market increases alongside foreign, diaspora, and local investors find Somaliland an increasingly attractive destination.

Somaliland's first paper factory opens in Hargeisa

- A factory that produces paper, boxes and student notebooks -- the first such industry to be in operation in Somalilands in two decades -- opened in Hargeisa this past weekend. Establishing the AADCO Paper Factory has been in the works since 2009, owner Aden Barado said at the opening ceremony on Saturday (January 5th).

"It took so long because we are in a country that was destroyed," Barado said, adding that it is difficult to start a factory in Somaliland where there is little support to ease the process.

Somaliland/Somalia: How UK aid is empowering women with life skills and new livelihoods

''In Somaliland, less affected by recent conflict, the project represents a glimpse of hope and an example that the rest of the country might follow''. SEED

- The Sustainable Employment and Economic Development Programme (SEED), is transforming lives in Somaliland. In the business of selling meat, Swizzer Mohamed never thought she would use camel by-products to manufacture soap and jewellery.  However, thanks to the UK aid funded Sustainable Employment and Economic Development Programme (SEED), Swizzer has seen the most tangible development product ever initiated, in Hargeisa, Somaliland.

Rageh Omaar joins ITV News

- Ex-BBC reporter who became a household name during the Iraq invasion leaves al-Jazeera to become ITV special correspondent.

Rageh Omaar, the former BBC war reporter who was dubbed the "Scud stud" during the Iraq war, is to become a special correspondent with ITV News. Omaar joins ITV this week from Qatar-based news channel al-Jazeera, which he joined in 2006.

The Somalia-born reporter became a household name during the invasion of Iraq, reporting from a hotel rooftop in Baghdad. It is not the first time ITV News has tried to hire Omaar, having tried but failed to woo him in 2004.

The Somaliland guide book: '' S/land with Addis Ababa & Eastern Ethiopia

Somaliland

- Little known to the outside world, Somaliland has much to offer the truly intrepid traveller. This pioneering guidebook introduces one of the world’s least chartered travel destinations. Author Philip Briggs covers everything from the low-key capital Hargeisa and mediaeval port of Berbera to peerless rock art sites such as Las Geel, and the scenery and wildlife of the Daallo Escarpment, towering 2,000m high above the pristine reefs of the Gulf of Aden.

Somaliland’s ruined cities and historical ports date back 5,000 years and have links with ancient Egypt and Axum in northern Ethiopia, as well as the Ottoman and British Empires. This guide offers background and practical information to every accessible corner of the country with the only real maps in existence of its capital and other large towns, and a section on wildlife.

Sheeko: ''Diin-kii Ku Hawooday Inuu Duulo ''- Prof. C/Salaam Yaasiin

- Diin ayaa noloshiisii dhul-yaalka iyo gaabiska ahayd nebcaaday. Wuxu jeclaystay in uu sida shimbraha duulo oo cirka heehaabo; guudkana ka soo eego dhulkan iyo dhirtan uu ku abaaday ee uu dhex gurguuranayo. Isaga oo naftiisa la hadlaya wuxu ku yidhi, “Hadaan mar uun samada u bixi lahaa, sidaa shimbraha oo kale ayaan duuli lahaa.”

Wuxu naftiisa u sheekeeyo oo uu naawilo in uu maruun duuloba, maalin ayaa geed uu hoos jiifay gorgor ku soo degay. Gorgogiikii ayuu la hadalay oo ku yidhi, “Gorgorow, wax alla wax aan maal aduun leeyahay ayaan ku siinayaa duulista i bar.  Gorgorkii ayaa ku yidhi, “Ma suuro gelayso,  Diinow, taasi.” “Waayo?” Ayuu weydiiyay diinki. “Abuurtaado uma samaysna in aad duushid ee waxay u samaysantahay in aad gurguurato.”

‘A Strong Foot To Stand On’...'' Meliisa works in Somaliland's mass graves

MelissaSimmill.jpg

''The evidence of atrocities and human rights violations that Simmill and fellow UNBC student Don Ireland collected in Somaliland will be sent to the United Nations’ War Crimes Commission''. Robert Freeman

- It’s tempting to ask Melissa Simmill ‘What’s a pretty girl like you doing exhuming decaying bodies from mass graves?’ Don’t do it. You won’t feel good about yourself. Like me when I posed the question to the 24-year-old University of Northern BC student during an interview for this story.

It made no difference that her father, Fraser Valley RCMP Traffic Services Staff Sgt. Jim Simmill, was sitting by her side.

Thank you Christopher. By Edna Adan

- Christopher Stanfield made it to Hargeisa this afternoon (Friday, 4/1/213). We met him by the roundabout at the end of the road from the Hospital and found him surrounded by a crowd of children and other people curious about this man with a turban and pulli...ng a cart. We walked back to the hospital where we had some pictures taken. Will share these with you when I get copies. This time I have been promised by the volunteers who took pictures and videos. We also had reporters and he is likely to be in the local papers tomorrow. He is a delightful man who has such a story to tell ! It would make a great story for a book or a film.

I feel so touched that someone would walk 4000 kilometers, go through so much hardship and personal danger to support our hospital. If this never raises a cent, I still feel that Christopher has given us the greatest gift ever...'
Thank you Christopher.---- Edna Adan

Somaliland could get first foreign branch campus this year

''He said Somaliland – a stable region in turbulent Somalia – was an attractive investment destination, including in the field of higher education''.

- The horn of Africa’s self-declared state of Somaliland may get its first foreign university by mid-2013, if plans by a private university in Kenya to open a branch campus there come to fruition. The rapidly expanding though relatively new Mount Kenya University, headquartered in Thika in central Kenya, is planning to open a campus in the Somaliland capital Hargeisa.

Sheeko: ''Wacad Ma leeyahay?! - Prof. C/Salaam Yaasiin

- Mas iyo reer ayaa meel wada degay. Markii lays arkaa cabsiyi timi oo la kala baqay. Dhowr jeer ayaa reerki isku deyay inuu maskii dilo; umaysi suuro gelin. In muddo ah wax sheed layska eegtoba, reerkii oo aroos diyaarinaya ayaa maska meel dheer kala hadlay. Wuxu ku yidhi, “ Waar, cabsi joogto ah kuma jiri karo eh, aan heshiino, oo wacad alla galo in aynu is nabadgelino.”

Wacadkii ayaa reerkii iyo maskii galeen. Iyaga oo cabsidii ay maska ka qabeen ka baxday, ayay farxaddii arooska iyo ciyaartiisii u jeesteen. Nabad, farxad, iyo dabaaldeg ayaa lagu seexday. Hasa yeeshee, nimcadi ma sii waarin oo maskii caruuskii ayuu qaniinay oo dilay. Waana baxsaday. Isaga oo firdhad ah oo la daba joogo ayaa waxa uu ku soo baxay nin socoto ah. Wuxu ku yidhi, “Waar ninyahaw i magan geli dad baa idaba socda oo doonaya inay i dilaan eh.” Ninki wuxu u celiyay, “Mas baad tahee sideen kuu aaaminayaa?” “Wacad alle ayaynu gelaynaa,” ayuu ku yidhi maski.

Educating The World With a Coin a Day! ''Simple idea, big pay-off

- Everyone can afford to donate one dirham, dollar, pound, S/land-shiling, or yen, and these small donations into the One Coin Project can fund the schooling of children in developing countries. Prof Izhar ul Haq tells Friday how it’s possible.... The scenes in front of him were disturbing – heavily pregnant women trekking through dangerous terrain to consult a doctor more than 20 kilometres away. Malnourished women and children drawing muddy water for cooking from a dirty pond. Toddlers and babies playing in the dirt while their older brothers and sisters sat around despondent. Twenty-year-olds who looked in their fifties due to malnourishment and ill-health...

It was in 2009, the first time Professor Izhar ul Haq, then president of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Institute of Science and Technology (Szabist) in Karachi, had been to Gharo village – a rural area near where he was living in Sindh, Pakistan – and it was a visit that would change his life.

Somaliland: the Violent Militant, Khatumo’s “Press Release” Back Fires

- Recently, Osman Hassan, a self-proclaimed “spokesman” (or a cyberspace militant) for the violent Khatumo militia, in the small village of Taleh, in Sool region, published an article, a bag of meaningless accusations, entitled, “Somaliland occupying militia gang-rape 13-year old girl in Sool “. But do these accusations don’t hold water and you will be surprised!

As usual, Mr. Hassan’s emotions precede his arguments. Moreover, almost the entire content of any of his articles is predictable. It is all about Somaliland this, Somaliland that; one-clan entity this, one-clan entity that…etc. (For reasons that even baffle my eighty-eight-year-old grandmother, Mr. Hassan has fetish for recycling the same stale, palpable propaganda.)

Somaliland Government to Simplify business Regulations

"We will create a website to collect information about investment, available opportunities, ..''  said Mohamed Saleban

- The Somaliland government is working to simplify policies governing investment and business creation as part of its efforts to strengthen trade and attract foreign and local investors.

The Somaliland Investment Guide, developed in partnership with the Somaliland Ministry of Commerce and the Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture, will be a clearinghouse of economic, legal, regulatory and investment information for local, diaspora and foreign investors.
