Jid Ha La Marin!: Prof. C/Salaam Yaasiin

- Laba nin baa wada socdaalay. Wadadii ay haysteen ayaa meel xidh ah la gashay. Iyaga oo xidhkii dhex socda, ayaa waxa ku soo baxay libaax. Labadii nin mid baa markiiba cararay oo geed dheer fuulay. Kii kale, oo aan weli halkiisii ka dhaqaaqin, ayaa libaax ku soo dhowaaday. Ma carari karo, geed ma kori karo, libaaxa uma jilib dhigi karo. Wuxu tab iyo xeelada si degdeg ah u raadshoba, wuxu talo ku gaadhay inuu jiifsado oo mayd iska dhigo. Markuu jiifsaday ayaa libaaxii dul yimi. Ninkii, oo dhaqaaq daayay, oo neeftii isku dhejiyay, oo bakhti iska dhigay, ayaa libaax dhowr jeer ursaday. Libaaxi inuu ninki bakhti yahay ayuu u qaatay. Libaaxuna bakhatiga ma cuno. Sidaa darteed libaaxi nikii jiifay wuu ka tegay.

Ka dib markuu libaaxi fogaaday oo kayntii dhex galay, ayaa ninkii geedka dheer fuulay soo degay oo u yimi kii dhulka jiifay oo sare fadhiya. Wuxu weydiiyay, “Libaaxi waa kii kula xanshashaqaye, muxuu dhegta kuu saaray?” Ninkii jiifsaday wuxu ugu jawaabay, “Libaaxi wuu ila taliyay.” Isaga oo yaabsan ayuu ku yidhi, “Oo muxuu kugula taliyay?” “Wuxu igula taliyay in aanan jid la marin nin marka halis ka hortimaado carara!!!”

Hargeisa, The Capital of Somaliland

Hargeisa the capital city of Somaliland

- Hargeisa is the capital of Somaliland and the largest city in Somaliland (population 1,300.000). The city was the colonial capital of the British Somaliland protectorate from 1941 to 1960, when it gained independence as the State of Somaliland and united with Italian Somaliland to form the Somali Republic.

Today Somaliland is an unrecognised self-declared sovereign state, but it is internationally recognised only as an autonomous region of Somalia. The government of Somaliland considers itself as the successor state to the British Somaliland protectorate, which was independent for a few days in 1960 (as the State of Somaliland) before uniting with the Trust Territory of Somalia (the former Italian Somaliland) to form the Somali Republic.

After years of civil war and the collapse of the central government, the local government declared independence from the rest of Somalia on May 18, 1991. Since then, the territory has been governed by an administration that seeks self-determination as the Republic of Somaliland. The local government maintains informal relations with some foreign governments, who have sent delegations to Hargeisa. However, Somaliland’s self-proclaimed independence remains unrecognised by any country or international organisation.

Edna Adan’s Maternity Hospital is Saving Somaliland’s Women and Their Babies

Women Who Inspire: Edna Adans Maternity Hospital is Saving Somalilands Women and Their Babies

- Many of Somaliland’s women die each year due to complications with childbirth. Easily treatable maladies such as anemia, preeclampsia and prolonged labor often cause serious complications or death among pregnant woman. In recent years, the country has seen a drop in the number of midwives, mainly impart due to an aging generation of women who can no longer provide the necessary medical attention needed during childbirth.

Edna Adan knew of the critical concerns surrounding maternity healthcare in her country. As a women who was given the opportunity to attend school and later earned a coveted scholarship to study in Britain where she pursued midwifery, nursing and hospital management, Adan wanted to help other women in Somaliland have the same opportunities by providing them and their soon-to-be-born children with healthcare.

Upon her return from Britain, Adan became the first qualified nurse-midwife and the first woman in her country to drive. She married Somaliland’s prime minister, Ibrahim Egal, but eventually the two got divorced and Adan moved on to join the World Health Organization where she fought against the traditional practice of female genital mutilation.

Somaliland and South Sudan – The Inseparable Friends

- Friends indeed are friends in need: this is famous proverb in many languages, which explains that the real friends are those share the pain at the hard times under similar circumstance.

Somaliland and South Sudan had common history of liberation struggle in the heart of Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia; Somaliland and South Sudan gained freedom after long armed struggle against most dangerous and inhuman dictators in the east Africa; Somali National Movement (SNM) and Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) liberated their countries from the dictators in Mogadishu (Siyad Barre 1969-1991) and Khartoum.

Mogadishu and Khartoum regimes used all forms of prohibited weapon against civilians in Hargiesa and Juba including air bombardment, rape and mass killing of civilians, in addition to chemical weapon used in Hargiesa by Siyad Barre regime.

The people of Somaliland and South Sudan had identical aim of living in peace and democracy, and they both achieved at high cost. The Barre regime killed more than 60,000 civilians in less than three months period, and Juba was facing similar situation where Khartoum military aircrafts bombed the main areas in South Sudan. In both countries, the freedom fighters created lasting peace and democracy as they are ready to catch up the economy developments in the region and to make up to the time they spend in liberation fighting.

Uncovering Somaliland's Troubled Past

- With CJA's sponsorship, the Peruvian Forensic Anthropology Team and the government of the self-declared Republic of Somaliland have opened an international forensic training program in Hargeisa, Somaliland. The project runs from September 24 through October 21, 2012. Participants in this historic effort will share their experience with the rest of the world throughout that time. Their posts will inform and reflect on the search for the missing and disappeared, giving readers a window into the process of fact-finding and forensic investigation of human rights violations in Somaliland that will allow access to truth and justice for the families of the victims.

Forensic Anthropology and Human Rights

Organized collection of forensic evidence of human rights violations is an important step toward discovering the truth, achieving justice, and ensuring that such crimes are not repeated. Incontrovertible physical evidence of such abuses is important both for the judicial process and for the survivors, as it provides the world with an objective account and acknowledgement of the abuses suffered.  With CJA’s sponsorship, the Somaliland government and the Peruvian Forensic Anthropology Team are opening an international forensic training program in Somaliland. The project runs from September 24 through October 21, 2012, and participants are posting updates and reflections here regularly throughout that time.

CJA filed suit against a case against a high-ranking Somali commander, Colonel Yusuf Abdi Ali “Tuke”

Archive: Doe v. Ali

IN BRIEF

On November 10, 2004, CJA filed suit against a case against a high-ranking Somali commander, Colonel Yusuf Abdi Ali (nicknamed “Tokeh” or “Tukeh”) for torture, extrajudicial killing, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. The suit aims to hold Tukeh responsible for direct acts of human rights violations as well as for abuse committed by soldiers under his command in northern Somalia in the 1980s. CJA represents two members of the Isaaq clan who were subjected to brutal torture and abuse by Tukeh and his troops. Due to concerns for their safety, both plaintiffs have elected to proceed anonymously as Jane Doe and John Doe.

The court administratively closed the case against Col. Tukeh in 2007, pending determination of the immunity issues raised by Yousuf v. Samantar. The case was reopened in October 2011, only to be stayed again pending the Supreme Court’s decision in Kiobel v. Royal Dutch Petroleum.

Iran's president talks about anti-Islam film, Israel and homosexuality

New York (CNN) -- Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad slammed an anti-Islam film that has provoked a violent reaction in the Muslim world, spoke strongly against homosexuality and said what his country would do if attacked by Israel in an interview airing Monday on CNN's "Piers Morgan Tonight."

The president denounced the film, "Innoncence of Muslims," that portrays the Prophet Mohammed as a womanizer, child molester and killer. The online video has led to a wave of global unrest.

"Fundamentally, first of all, any action that is provocative, offends the religious thoughts and feelings of any people, we condemn," Ahmadinejad said.

"Likewise, we condemn any type of extremism. Of course, what took place was ugly. Offending the Holy Prophet is quite ugly. This has very little or nothing to do with freedom and freedom of speech.

Siyaasada Somaliland Ee Khusaysa Passportka Somalia

- Waxan halkan idinkula wadaagayaa siyaasada iyo go’aanka dawlada Somaliland ay ka gaadhay Passportka TFG’da Somaliya iyo waxa laga yeelayo qofka sita ee imanaya Somaliland iyo passportka ay qaadanayaan ee loo ogol yahay dadka tegaya Xajka ee reer Somaliland. Arrinka xajka sida lagu tegayaa waa arrin xasaasiya oo u baahnaa xal degdeg ah. Taasoo ay dawlada Somaliland kala xidhiidhay Dawlada Sucuudiga sidii jawaab degdeg ah loogu heli lahaa.

Dawalada Somaliland ee Madaxwayne Ahmed Silanyo waxay go’aan satay sidii dawladihii hore ee Somaliland; in Passportkii hore ee Somaliya ee jiray wixii ka horeeyay 1991-kii lagu tagi karo Xajka sannadkan 2012. Saudi Arabiana taa hore ayay u ogolayd oo dadka reer Somaliland xajka ugu tegi jireen.

Hargeisa (British Office): Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs

- I am pleased to inform the House that the British Office in Hargeisa opened formally on 3 September, in line with my intent to establish a presence in Mogadishu and Hargeisa as soon as local conditions allow. This office enables officials to stay in Hargeisa for short periods to carry out diplomatic work in Somaliland. Because of the security situation, this office will not have any consular functions, and we have not changed our advice on travel to the region. Staff are already able to travel and stay in our office in Mogadishu, where work continues on plans to reopen the embassy as soon as local circumstances permit.

The new office in Hargeisa and future British embassy in Mogadishu are part of the expansion of Britain’s diplomatic network that I announced to the House on 4 September, Hansard, column 152. This involves the opening of up to 11 new embassies, up to eight new British consulates/British trade offices and the redeployment of around 300 extra staff in more than 20 countries in Asia, Latin America and Africa. I will provide the House with a further update on UK diplomatic representation in Somalia as progress is made.

Edna Adan Ismail: a Somali Inspiration

- The following profile was written by Joanne Butcher, BA Politics, University of Sheffield, and published here: Edna Adan Ismail: a Somali Inspiration

Born in Hargeisa in 1937, Edna Adan Ismail is one of Somaliland’s most prominent public figures. From 1954 to 1961, she studied in Britain – the first Somali woman to do so – to become a nurse and midwife. After working as a civil servant, she held the position of Minister for Family Welfare and Social Development and most notably held the title of Somaliland’s Foreign Minister from 2003 until 2006. Throughout the 1980s, she served as advisor to a range of councils at the World Health Organisation before retiring in 1997 when she dedicated her life to her most recent project: the Edna Adan University Hospital.

Alas the gravity and magnitude of Ismail’s career is lost in simply detailing her achievements. It’s important to remember that Edna Adan, as a young girl growing up in Somaliland, was not expected to go to school or acquire any qualifications. “Britain used to select boys from secondary schools to study in England and in 1952 or 53. The very first school for girls was opened in Somaliland and I was a pupil-teacher at the time,” she remembers.

''The son of General Barre's former chief of immigration office wants to become a leader thus follow his butchering footsteps of his father''. Raage

- It took most of Somalis by surprise, wherever they were at the time, when you briskly, without seeing behind your nose, boldly threw down the gauntlets, thus, unilaterally declaring yourself as Somalia's presidential candidate forgetting the past inglorious dark history, partly perpetrated by your father, which humiliatingly reduced Somalia into ungovernable chaotic entities under the control of quasi mafia-style warlords.

I would like to vividly remind you that the root cause of the current Somalia's endless inter-clan feuds goes back to the days, when your late illiterate father was one of the perpetrators of genocidal campaigns, exclusively directed against one major section of Somali population. Believe it or not, your father's name is in the top list of murderous criminals, who precisely planned and concisely executed that highly orchestrated genecidal military operations inflicted first against members of Issaq clan, and later against the Hawiyes, who the combination of the two, make up over seventy percent of the whole Somali population, a according to the 1974-1975 statics' census, meticulously carried out by the Somalis students under the supervision of UNDP, at the time when the illiteracy campaign was in full swing. The original copies of the static's data that makes the combination of Issaq and Hawiye over seventy percent is still available in the UNDP regional office in Nairobi, despite the fact that then then fascist regime of General Barre locked up in the archives, thus, banning such valuable documents from the public use, apparently for known reasons.

''Booraan Hadimo'': Prof C/Salaam Yaasiin

- Libaax ayaa subixii kalahay oo ugaadhsi tegay. Waxay jidka isku dhaafeen dawco iyana soo ugaadhsi tagtay. Libaaxi raxan deero ah ayuu ku soo baxay oo baacsaday; wayse ka fakadeen oo wuu gaadhi-waayay. Dawcadiina sheedda ayay ka daawanaysaa. Hadana wuxu ku soo baxay raxan cawl ah; iyana waa baacsaday waana gaadhiwaayay. Barqo ayay ku dhowaatay; cadceedina waa kululaatay. Libaaxiina gaajo iyo daal ayaa isugu darsamay. Wixii tamar ku hadhay intuu ururiyay, ayuu aydii iyo banaankiiba diiradda saaray. Wuxu arkay siig kaligii meel daaqaya. Rejo ayaa halkaasi uga muuqatay inuu ugaadh uu ku qadeeyo maanta helo.

Intuu geediihii oo dheeraaday dhexgalay ayuu xagii siig u gucleeyay. Markii uu ku dhowaaday, ayuu dhabacday, oo sanqadh tirtay, oo gaatamay. Haddii uu hubsaday inaanu siigi dhaadin ee uu iska daaqayo, ayuu wixii uu taag iyo tamar lahaa isu geeyay oo weerar xoogan ku qaaday. Siigii oo aan weerarka filaynin ayaa goor dambe hambaberay oo is yidhi fako. Hase ahaatee, intaanu meel fog gaadhin ayaa libaaxi ku habsaday oo dhulka dhigtay.

Strong Case for Somaliland Recognition

''Talks or no talks our Sovereignty is neither for discussion nor compromise.... Following the costly reclamation of our independence and in view of Somalilanders’ desire for self-rule, we do hereby ask the world to respect our people's decision and recognize Somaliland as a free country with full membership at the United Nations''. President Ahmed M. Mohamoud (Silanyo)

- The Republic of Somaliland reasserted its independence from Somalia on May 18, 1991. Since then Somaliland has demonstrated the characteristics of a robust democratic state: government composed of three branches—the executive, the legislative and the judicial—to ensure the separation of powers; numerous free and fare elections at both the national and local levels; three contending political parties; free media; freedom of association, assembly and speech; its own currency and passport. Therefore, the people of Somaliland are rightly anticipating from the international community to grant their well-deserved recognition.

In addition to its unmatched democratic triumphant in the Horn, Somaliland has satisfied all the requirements of statehood: first, the union between Somaliland and Somalia was, and still is, legally nonbinding; secondly, Somaliland fulfills the prerequisites of statehood under international law; thirdly, Somaliland satisfies Article 4(b) of the African Union Charter regarding the legality of its border; fourthly, Somaliland’s case for recognition resembles other breakaway states around the world; and lastly, the political reasons, rather than legal reasons, that hinder Somaliland’s recognition.

Abdourahman A. Waberi–PASSAGE OF TEARS: Reviews by Mary Whipple

- In one of the most stimulating novels I have read in years, Djibouti author Abdourahman A. Waberi, now living in France, explores issues of crucial contemporary importance while examining the history of religious extremism and how young people are drawn to it. He does this within the context of an intriguing, often poetic, novel which contains mysteries, a spy narrative, secret identities, a writer speaking from the grave, and a mystical, real-time connection between two characters who never meet during the narrative. I was glued to the pages of this short novel, and I am still thinking of all the mysteries the author raises here as he takes the reader in new directions, offering no easy answers.

In the opening chapter, Djibril, a Djibouti native now living in Montreal and working for a North American security company, returns on assignment to his former country after being away for eleven years: “I am on assignment in the land of my birth, the land that would not or could not keep me…The past interests me less than the future and my time is precious….In the world I [now] come from, time doesn’t stretch out before you into the mist. Time is money.” Dibril (“Call me Djib.”) has arrived on a one-week mission to evaluate whether Djibouti is secure, the political situation stable and the terrorists under control. His employer, Adorno Location Scouting, has been contracted to investigate on behalf of a client which wants to do some development there, but they need someone like Djibril with insights into the country itself for the security analysis. Despite being away from Djibouti for more than a decade, however, Djibril is not anonymous – he is tracked by unidentified men from the instant he sets foot on the soil.

Our African style politicians: Somaliland

- In his famous book “laws of politics”, Morton Blackwell stated that “policy will not move until it’s accelerated by the politicians”. Then I asked myself what about if the politician himself is physically and mentally retarded unable to pull or push any single entity? As in the case of this country we always turn wrong eyes to the matter, and the real circumstances. We always take an impossible decision without thinking deeply on the day-to-day changes of the political conditions and their stalemates.

As Somaliland citizens, we sometimes become slaves of politicians by taking seriously whatever political statements they put to persuade us something from nothing, while they are hiding something of secretive to somewhere deep in their heart, something they went to quench their thirsty: VOTE. Sometimes, in a madness situation we deliberately sit in front of a TV camera merely to defend in clannish system for a politician arrested for his corrupting actions and criminals he committed against this marginal impoverished community of Somaliland. To put them in the ladder that will enable them to reach the highest and the most influential post in the country: the presidential office, they always try to benefit from our natural weakness and pitfalls by acting as a wolf in a sheep’s wool.

Maxaad Ka Taqaan Sababtii Uu Siyaad Bare Ku Casilay Axmed Siilaanyo 30-Gu' Ka-Hor

''Haddii Maamulka Siilaanyo uu daacad ka yahay la dagaalanka musuqmaasuqa maxaa Cali Xoor-Xoor loogu soo celiyey maamulkii Dekeda Berbera ee hore xukuumada cusubi uga qaaday?'' C/laahi

- Waxay ahayd horaantii 1980-kii ka dib markii khilaaf xagga maamulka ahi uu soo kala dhex galay madaxwaynihii dalka Soomaaliya ee wakhtigaa Maxamed Siyad Bare iyo Axmed Maxamed Maxamuud (Siilaanyo) oo markaa ahaa Wasiirkiisa Ganacsiga .

Markii arinkani dhacay ayaa Maxamed Siyaad Barre u yeedhay Axmed Silaanyo si uu ugu qanciyo inuu labadan nin dib ugu celiyo shaqadoodii. Arintaa Axmed Silanyo waa ka gows adaygay, waxaanay dhalisay inuu sidaa wasiirnimadii ku waayo, in yar ka dibna uu ugu biro jabhadii Dhaqdhaqaaga Wadinaga Soomaaliyeed ee “SNM” oo uu markii danbe gudoomiye u noqday.

Somalia's Transition. A never-ending story

''The example of neighbouring Somaliland appear to indicate that, perhaps, greater consideration should be given to the fact that "self government"....Carlo

- In November 2001, as newly appointed head of the Italian Diplomatic Delegation for Somalia, in Nairobi, I began a very active participation in a Peace Conference which was designed to complete Somalia's transition to stable, credible and internationally recognized Government.

This lengthy and complicated peace progress, which lasted well into the year 2004, was fatally marred, in my view, by some hasty decisions taken at its very conclusion. These took little account of the lengthy and patient negotiations which had preceded them and possibly were dictated by funding problems, as well as strong pressure by the Ethiopian Government, eager to reach a conclusion seen as favourable to Ethiopian interests. The end result, therefore, appeared to me, already then, as fundamentally flawed, and unlikely to bring more than a temporary respite to the political turmoil in Somalia. Even so, it is disheartening to realise that all those months of careful, finely-balanced talks, with their dramatic and at times highly emotional interludes, would end up with the current situation, in which, eight years on, little significant political progress is visible.

Somaliland Local elections will be tough test for democracy: Progressio

Women campaiging during Somaliland elections

- Somaliland will need to overcome several obstacles if it is to successfully hold local elections this year, according to a new report from Progressio. The report (below) says that obstacles to credible elections include a high level of complexity in the planned process, and recent challenges to press freedom.

However, the delay in holding the elections - originally planned for April and now scheduled for November 2012 - means that improvements could be put in place before the elections if the political will is there to do so, says the report.

Progressio's Steve Kibble, who co-authored the report with Michael Walls, says: "These elections are a crucial test for the democratisation process in Somaliland. If they go well, they could increase local accountability and give the poeple of Somaliland more ownership of the political process.

"We hope that this report will help all involved to focus on working together to overcome the challenges and ensure that the elections are a success."

Fears of vigilantism after rape of young girl: ''Somalian teen arrested for rape of...

''Somalian teen arrested for rape of 10-year-old girl after week of fear of reprisals against small town’s immigrant community'' CPHPOST

Denmark:- The rape of a ten-year-old has shocked the residents of a small town in Jutland, and led to fears residents would seek revenge against the suspect – a 16-year-old boy of Somalian descent. A week ago last Saturday two girls were threatened at knife-point by a boy and led into a forest. While the nine-year-old girl managed to escape and sound the alarm, the ten-year-old was raped.

It took over a week for the police to make an arrest, and in the meantime the description of the culprit – an 'African-looking' male between the ages of 16 and 18 and with black curly hair – was circulated.

Some 40 percent of the town’s residents are immigrants and several boys and young men fit the description given by the girls. While the police began collecting evidence, rumours started circulating that groups of residents were looking to take matters into their own hands and young immigrant men were warned to stay indoors.
