- A self-declared republic in Somalia asked Ethiopia to reroute its nascent oil and gas exports via a proposed new pipeline, challenging Djibouti’s long-held plans for a conduit.

The overture from Somaliland comes as Ethiopia begins exploiting an estimated 8 trillion cubic feet of natural gas and test-drilling for oil in its restive east. It’s the latest bid by the Somali territory, which has sought statehood for almost three decades and plans its own crude output, to leverage its strategic location near the Red Sea to attract major foreign infrastructure projects.

Somaliland seeks ties with Kenya in education, agricultural sectors

- Kenya and Somaliland are exploring ways of working together in the education and agricultural sectors to grow their economies. The Horn of Africa nation is also keen to learn from Kenya’s democratic system of governance.

Somaliland Foreign Affairs Minister Saad Shire is in the country for a series of meetings with Kenyan leaders as he pushes for stronger diplomatic ties between the two counties. On Thursday morning, Dr Shire met National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale. The two leaders discussed how the Kenyan and Somaliland parliaments can work together.

- On a hot and humid June afternoon, a group of boys wearing FC Barcelona jerseys kicked around a soccer ball in the Malko-Durduro, a dry seasonal river on the outskirts of Hargeisa, the capital of the breakaway territory of Somaliland. At first glance, the flat, red earth of the riverbed made for a typical improvised pitch in this arid region. But recent heavy rains had exposed what had earned the area the moniker “the Valley of Death.” Around them, human bones protruded from the ground. But these kids had grown up playing soccer surrounded by skeletal remains; they hardly noticed them.

DP World Sees Key Role for Once-Isolated State in Port Strategy

- The Red Sea state of Eritrea may play a key role in DP World Ltd.’s plans in the Horn of Africa, where a dozen ports could be needed to service the region, Chief Executive Officer Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem said.

The Dubai-based state-controlled harbor operator is evaluating its strategy in the region after having its stake in a port in Djibouti -- the main trade route for Ethiopia, Africa’s fastest-growing economy -- nationalized by the government. Developing more ports in the Horn, including one it’s already building at Berbera in the self-declared republic of Somaliland, will help boost trade flows to Dubai, Bin Sulayem said in an interview.

Somaliland's world-leading move towards a cashless culture

- Abdul Rashid has sold sweet Somali tea on the muddy streets of Hargeisa for decades. As night falls in the capital of breakaway Somaliland and worshipers flood out of the mosque, a handful congregate around his rickety table. While he pours from a flask into paper cups, buyers type a string of numbers into mobile phones, take their tea and go on their way. A cup of Mr Rashid’s tea costs 2,000 Somaliland shillings – equivalent to $0.25 or Dh0.92 – and his customers pay almost exclusively with their mobile phones. “I never see cash,” he tells The National. 

Mr Rashid is not alone. Across Somaliland – which declared independence from Somalia in 1991 but is yet to gain recognition from the international community – people are turning away from cash and embracing mobile money. This makes the region, with its tiny livestock-dependent economy, a candidate for the world’s first cashless society.

- On the dusty streets of Somaliland’s capital Hargeisa, Mohammed Ahmed Ismail is arranging paper money in his tidy, waiting for clients who wish to exchange foreign currency.

Ismail has more than five years experience in the trade. Together with his colleagues, they stack notes in wheelbarrows and move around looking for clients who want to exchange foreign currency for Somaliland shilling.

But lately, there clientele has been waning and the business losing lustre. Reason? Technology.

DP World investment boosts Somaliland's push for sovereignty

- DP World's $442 million expansion of Berbera port in Somaliland will put the breakaway state on the path to formal independence from Somalia, its president has said. The Horn of Africa state declared independence in 1991, when Somali president Mohamed Siad Barre fell and Somalia erupted into chaos. But in the intervening years, its campaign for international recognition has fallen on deaf ears. Today, Somaliland has many of the attributes of a sovereign state, including its own military and police forces, a functioning government and institutions and its own currency, the Somaliland shilling.Yet Somalia still claims ownership over the territory, although its tangible influence there is minimal. 

“Somalia cannot interfere in our affairs,” Somaliland President Muse Behi Abdi told The National. “Mogadishu has no control over our country.”

- DP World has launched the first stage of its Berbera port expansion, designed to equip the Somaliland port for major vessels and transform it into one of Africa’s pre-eminent facilities in the breakaway region. A ground breaking ceremony with Somaliland’s vice president, Abdirahman Saylici and DP World executives took place in the small coastal town at the tip of the Horn of Africa on Wednesday.

“Our aim is to make this an important regional hub for the maritime industry in the Horn of Africa,” DP World Chairman and CEO, Sultan bin Sulayem said at the official signing on Thursday.

International community calls for end to Hargeisa and Mogadishu hostilities

By CORRESPONDENT, NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 2 – Pressure is mounting on Somaliland and Somalia to sit on a round table and sort their political and border disputes.

- The international community wants talks between the leadership in Hergeisa (Somaliland) and Mogadishu (Somalia) to re-open dialogue to end the cold war between them. Somaliland government has stated they are ready for a fresh round of talks after the Netherlands and Danish envoys to Kenya (and Somalia) said they would be ready to help initiate dialogue. Nairobi has been identified as one of the potential venues for the talks which have previously collapsed after agreements have been signed with both sides accusing each other of reneging on the signed deals.
